As part of Teacher Appreciation Week, DeLeon’s Parent Teacher Organization hosted a Hawaiian-themed luncheon for the teachers as a way to say “You make working here feel like paradise.”
Sandwiches, chips, fruit and drinks awaited the educators as well as five-minute chair massages from massage therapist Angela Shaefer.
“I have two children that go here, so I like to do as much as I can to help out our teachers,” said Becky Mattocks, vice president of the PTO. “They do so much for our children. They deserve to be appreciated.”
The school recognizes teachers each year during Teacher Appreciation Week, said Heather Leigh, a part-time reading teacher at the school and treasurer of the PTO. This year the principals did a little something each day, like having students write notes to their teachers and presenting them as a message in a bottle.
“It’s been a lot of fun,” said Marcia Wozniak, a first grade teacher. “We always look forward to the luncheon. We appreciate everything the PTO does for us.”
Wozniak said that it’s nice to be recognized during Teacher Appreciation Week, but she feels appreciated all year.
“I’ve gotten a lot of compliments from the kids this week,” Wozniak. “I think they appreciate us. I’ve gotten some comments from parents. Some are more supportive and go above and beyond.”
Other schools in the district are also recognizing teachers during the week with small gifts like candy or chocolates, notes and lunches. Guadalupe Elementary School teachers will be treated to a catered meal for lunch today and F.W. Gross’ Parent Teacher Association will provide teachers with a lunch on Friday.
“I think it’s been wonderful,” said Kathy Stratmann, a music teacher at DeLeon. “Students have come in with notes written to me. It’s very special to read those.”
