Chad Wayne Carriker is awaiting charges from the Texas Rangers on one bank robbery, according to Lee County Jail records. The FBI is interviewing Carriker about a Jan. 23 bank robbery in Yorktown and an April 8 robbery in Ganado, FBI public information officer Patricia Villafranca said.
But until his May 7 arrest, the FBI and other law enforcement agencies suspect Carriker may have been the “Creepy Crawler” robber.
Villafranca came up with the nickname after seeing a picture of the suspect climbing clumsily over a bank teller’s counter in Yorktown.
“He was kind of not very athletic,” Villafranca said. The FBI also suspects a March 13 credit union robbery in Odem may be connected to the same man.
Part of Villafranca’s job is coming up with pseudonyms for bank robbers before they’re caught.
“We actually sit around and think about them,” she said, laughing.
Among her favorites are the “Runny Nose Robber,” who held a tissue over his nose and the “Desperate Dad” who handed the teller a note that said he had a new baby and needed only $1,000.
The names — even if they’re a little silly — can help identify a suspect, Villafranca said.
The most difficult part is coming up with new names when there have been lots of recent robberies, she said.
