Miranda Wang has been named valedictorian of Calhoun High School. She is the daughter of Benjamin and Sandy Wang of Port Lavaca. She plans to attend Rice University to major in cognitive sciences/pre-med. Her accomplishments include competed in academic UIL events at the state level; TASSP commended service award; president of band; and president of Interact.
Kevin Holder has been named salutatorian of Calhoun High School. He is the son of David and Barbara Holder. He plans to attend Houston Baptist University, to pursue a degree in molecular biology and biochemistry and degree in chemistry. His accomplishments include 2007 physics award; second place overall computer science at 2008 UHV-VC math and computer science awareness competition; National Honor Society 2006-08; and biology award 2005.
Colorado County
Brianna Marie Mazoch has been named valedictorian of Weimar High School. She is the daughter of James and Patricia Mazoch. She plans to attend Texas A&M University to pursue a degree in nutritional sciences. After graduating she will continue her education at the graduate level in either physical or occupational therapy. Her accomplishments include member of the UIL state champion literary criticism team in 2007; member of the UIL state silver medalist literary criticism team 2008; National Honor roll award; member of the National Honor Society.
Mary Elizabeth Brandt has been named the salutatorian of Weimar High School. She is the daughter of Ted Brandt and the late Virginia Brandt. She plans to attend Texas A&M University-College Station to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering. Her accomplishments include graduating with 19 college credit hours; Weimar FFA public relations: first in district; first in regional; second in state 2006-07; freshman class secretary, senior class reporter; and Weimar FFA Star Chapter award.
DeWitt County
James Pilip Chessman has been named valedictorian of Cuero High School. He is the son of Larry and Brenda Chessman. He plans to attend Baylor University and pursue a bachelors degree in church music with an emphasis in piano. His accomplishments include National Merit Finalist; member of 2006-07 UIL Science Team State champions; member of construction challenge team with final competition in Las Vegas; UIL State cross-ex debater for two years.
Jared Conrad Greenfield has been named salutatorian of Cuero High School. He is the son of Melissa Greenfield. He plans to attend Texas A&M University-College Station to pursue a degree in finance. His accomplishments include one act play, best actor at district, All-Star cast at area; JETS: first in region; second in state; 19th in national; team member of junior engineering technical society; member of Who’s Who Registry of Academic Excellence; member of National Honor Society.
Karnes County
Ryan Matthew Esparza has been named valedictorian of Runge High School. He is the son of Danny and Sally Esparza. He plans to attend Rensselear Plytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. to major in biomedical engineering and continue his education leading to a M.D. in orthopedics. His accomplishments include excelling in math and science; member of National Honor Society and FFA; participated in various sports and mentored students.
Jordan Elizabeth Esparza has been named salutatorian of Runge High School. She is the daughter of Danny and Sally Esparza. She plans to attend Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to major in nursing to become a nurse anesthetist. Her accomplishments include excelling in language arts; member of National Honor Society and FFA; being Miss Karnes County 2007.
Fayette County
Taryn Marie Tipton has been named valedictorian of Flatonia High School. She is the daughter of Tommy and Pam Tipton. She plans to attend Texas A&M-College Station and major in sports management with a minor in journalism. Her accomplishments include Girls’ State delegate 2006-07; dual credit student (Blinn College) 24 hours; Terry Foundation Scholar; and Texas A&M Honor College student.
Philip Nicholas Robinson has been named salutatorian of Flatonia High School. He is the son of Gregory and Myra Robinson. He plans to attend Texas A&M-College Station to major in business management while being a member of the Corps of Cadets. His accomplishments include Boys’ State delegate 2006-07; dual credit student (Blinn College) 24 hours; UIL Scholar award; and recipient of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets Scholarship.
Cody Matthew Vecera has been named valedictorian of Schulenburg High School. He is the son of Phillip and Betty Tucker and Gerald Vecera. He plans to attend Texas A&M University-College Station to major in mechanical engineering. His accomplishments include UIL number sense regional qualifier; Minnie Piper Stevens Foundation scholarship winner; National Honor Society; Senior class president; six outstanding student of the year awards; lettered in football and baseball; team captain in both sports.
Nicole Monique Gabler has been named salutatorian of Schulenburg High School. She is the daughter of Steve and Sylvia Gabler. She plans to attend Sam Houston State University to major in journalism and political science. Her accomplishments include placing sixth in current issues and events in 2008; 2006 current issues and events state qualifier; 2007 one act play state All-Star cast; Coca Cola scholar winner; DAR good citizen; girls state delegate; yearbook editor, and Miss Schulenburg.
Goliad County
Cody Anthony Foil has been named valedictorian of Goliad High School. He is the son of Brenda Foil and the late Milton Foil. He plans to attend college at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin to pursue a degree in accounting. His accomplishments include earning the honor of being a National Merit Scholar; scoring 2260 on the SAT and 35 on the ACT; advancing to the state level in UIL number sense; and advancing to the regional level in UIL spelling and vocabulary for three consecutive years.
Mallory Williams has been named salutatorian of Goliad High School. She is the daughter of Fred Williams of Victoria and Rhonda Williams of Goliad. She plans to attend Texas A&M-College Station, to pursue a bachelor’s in science with a major in biology. She has been accepted into Texas A&M’s Partnership for Primary Care Program. Upon completion of her undergraduate studies, she will attend A&M’s College of Medicine to fulfill her dream of becoming an obstetrician. Her accomplishments include National Honor Society; overall outstanding history student award; and academic all-district volleyball and tennis awards.
Jackson County
Molly Breanne Quinn has been named valedictorian of Edna High School. She is the daughter of Kerry and Sheila Quinn of Edna. She plans to attend the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor to pursue a degree in pre-medicine. Her accomplishments include National Honor Society president; distinguished honor roll; and State Farm scholar athlete.
Kelli Nicolle Wilson has been named salutatorian of Edna High School. She is the daughter of Danny and Susan Wilson of Victoria. She plans to attend Quachita Baptist University to pursue a degree in history/international studies. Her accomplishments include Gold youth leadership seminar; Rotary Youth Leadership Award seminar; and student council president.
Travis Lee McGarrah has been named valedictorian of Industrial High School. He is the son of Tony and Sherri McGarrah of Industrial. He plans to attend the University of Texas-Austin and major in mechanical engineering. His accomplishments include qualifying for state seven times in three different events all through high school; passing all AP tests; and placing in the TEAMS and Math Awareness competitions.
Leigh Ann Goris has been named salutatorian of Industrial High School. She is the daughter of Ted and Sylvia Goris of Victoria. She plans to attend Texas A&M-College Station, to major in architecture. Her accomplishments include second place TEAMS 2007; second place TEAMs 2006; top calculus student fall 2007.
Brady McCall Engelmohr has been named valedictorian of Ganado High School. He is the son of Harry and Sandra Engelmohr. He plans to attend the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor to pursue the field of dentistry. His accomplishments include National Honor Society; distinguished graduate; and completing 27 college hours.
Brooke Ann Andel has been named salutatorian of Ganado High School. She is the daughter of Michael and Barbara Andel. She plans to attend Wharton County Junior College to study radiology. Her accomplishments include National Honor Society; distinguished graduate; and completing 21 college hours.
Lavaca County
Brandon James Klekar has been named valedictorian of Hallettsville High School. He is the son of Robert and Margaret Klekar. He plans to attend Texas A&M-College Station to become an aeronautical engineer. His dream is to someday work at NASA, Lockheed Martin, or Boeing as an aircraft/spacecraft designer. His accomplishments include serving as National Honor Society vice-president; Spanish National Honor Society president; competing in UIL number sense for three years; named Duke TIP scholar and highest ranking male athlete; received highest honors and honor roll all four years in high school.
Chelsea Louise Hill has been named salutatorian of Hallettsville High School. She is the daughter of Terance and Michelle Hill. She plans to attend the University of Texas-Austin to earn a degree in biological sciences. Her accomplishments include being active in the Hallettsville High School Band where she served as drum major for her junior and senior years; member of the National Honor Society; SCOPE; Spanish National Honor Society; and Rotary Interact. She competed in both UIL science and math. She has maintained highest honors throughout high school.
Lindsey Schacherl has been named valedictorian of Moulton High School. She is the daughter of Dennis and Kathleen Schacherl. She plans to attend the University of Texas Pharmacy program to earn a degree as a pharmacist. Her accomplishments include obtaining a 4.0 GPA; member of the BETA Cub; secretary of senior class; nominated to the United States Achievement Academy All American Scholars; placing fourth in UIL computer applications at the district level and named 2008 outstanding High School student by the Moulton Chamber of Commerce.
Meliza Duenez has been named salutatorian of Moulton High School. She is the daughter of Zeferino and Flora Duenez. She plans to attend the University of Houston in Houston to pursue a degree in bilingual education. Her accomplishments include graduating with a 4.0 GPA; BETA Club member; UIL academics and basketball; perfect attendance award; Honor Roll award; letter of commendation from the National Honor; 2008 nominee for homecoming court; and Outstanding High School senior.
Kyle Welhausen Kaspar has been named valedictorian of Shiner High School. He is the son of Doug and Laura Kaspar. He plans to attend Texas A&M University and be a member of the Corps of Cadets. He has been accepted into the Mays Business Honors program. He will major in business management and obtain a masters of business administration. His accomplishments include being an Eagle Scout; tennis mixed doubles state champion junior year; Rotary exchange student to Argentina; and helped start Fellowship of Christian Athletes in his high school.
Courtney Nichele Frank has been named salutatorian of Shiner High School. She is the daughter of Jamie Mraz and Kevin Frank. She plans to attend Texas A&M University, to pursue a master’s degree in accounting. Her accomplishments include alternate to state in accounting; going to state three out of four years in one act play and going to state three out of four years in softball.
Elizabeth Frietsch has been named valedictorian of Yoakum High School. She is the daughter of Walter and Tammy Frietsch. She plans to attend Texas Tech University majoring in middle grade education. She plans to be a middle school teacher/twirling and color guard sponsor. Her accomplishments include Coca-Cola scholarship semi-finalist; made Texas Tech twirling line; made state band on bassoon her sophomore year; and two-year region literary criticism UIL qualifier.
Kelsey Renee Thomas has been named salutatorian of Yoakum High School. She is the daughter of Betty Thomas. She plans to attend the University of Texas-Austin to pursue a major in government and economics. She then plans to attend law school, become a lawyer and later a politician. Her accomplishments include being invited to attend band week at the University of Texas-Austin; accepted in the TIP scholars program at UT-Austin; making state in UIL accounting; and receiving a division one rating on a class one tuba solo at UIL solo and ensemble.
Matagorda County
Devon Elaine Dillard has been named valedictorian of Palacios High School. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Dillard. She plans to attend Tarleton State University to study business, fashion design, and music. She plans to have her own clothes, shoes, and handbag line and travel all over the world to experience different types of culture and fashions. Her accomplishments include maintaining a consistent A/AB honor roll; sixth place at state for feature writing; and Who’s Who Among American High School Students.
Chelsea Danee Young has been named salutatorian of Palacios High School. She is the daughter of Ms. Janice Young. She plans to attend the University of Texas-Austin to major in business and minor in political science or photojournalism.
Refugio County
Madeline Elizabeth Myers has been named valedictorian for Refugio High School. She is the daughter of Clay Myers and Jimmy and Sharon Baugh. She plans to attend Texas A&M-College Station to pursue a political science degree. Her accomplishments include UIL current issues and events regional silver medalist; academic excellence award; and Refugio ISD board of trustees recognition award.
Whitney Claire Shipp has been named salutatorian for Refugio High School. She is the daughter of Elizabeth and John Shipp. She plans to attend The University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio to pursue a nursing degree. Her accomplishments include academic excellence award for four years; theater productions subject award; National Honor Society member and officer for three years.
Elizabeth Allen has been named valedictorian of Woodsboro High School. She has taken dual credit courses from Coastal Bend College and graduated with 27 college hours, making her a sophomore upon entering college. She plans to attend Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. She is the daughter of William and Lucy Allen and granddaughter of Joe and Georgia Fey, all of Woodsboro. Her accomplishments include senior class president, student council president, BPA president, Spanish club president, National Honor Society vice president, FCA vice president, and FCCLA public relations officer. She placed fifth in the VFW Voice of Democracy contest and was selected as one of three outstanding seniors of Woodsboro High School.
Kierden Mary Elizabeth Williams has been named salutatorian of Woodsboro High School. She is the daughter of Van and Nancy Williams of Bayside. She has taken dual credit courses since her junior year and graduated with 21 college hours. Her accomplishments include board of trustees academic excellence award and the UIL scholar award. She was nominated for the Youth Leadership Council in Washington, D.C. She participated in numerous sports throughout high school. She is involved in Toys for Tots, Thanksgiving and Christmas food drive and has helped at the Boys and Girls Club annual fundraisers. She has also spent time at the Houston Food Bank packing food and supplies for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Victoria County
Luis Alberto Trevino has been named valedictorian of Bloomington High School. He is the son of Moises and Rosalinda Trevino. He plans to attend Texas State University and major in engineering. His accomplishments include top calculus AP student of the year; top government student of the year; received the Wilson M. Smith and Lyondell scholarships; placed first in number sense and third in science at academic UIL.
Bonnie Louise Hybner has been named salutatorian of Bloomington High School. She is the daughter of Rick and Barbara Hybner. She plans to attend Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and major in biomedical sciences on her way to becoming a dentist. Her accomplishments include the early graduate and DaCosta Sons of Hermann scholarships; earning 31 credit hours while in high school and All A honor roll.
Andrea Lisa Graff has been named valedictorian of Faith Academy. She is the daughter of Pastor Jim and Tamara Graff of Victoria. She plans to attend Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla to pursue a degree in communications. Her accomplishments include A-Honor roll 2004-08; Christian Honor Student Association 2007-08; National Honor Society, 2004-07; Who’s Who Among American High School Students, 2004-08; and Highest GPA Award, 2004-07.
Ashley Chantelle Hamilton has been named the salutatorian at Faith Academy. She is the daughter of Pastor Forrest and Pam Hamilton of Victoria. She plans to attend Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla. She is searching for a career path and will work to explore a major. Her accomplishments include A-Honor Roll, 2004-08; Christian Honor Student Association, 2007-08; National Honor Society, 2004-07; Who’s Who Among American high School Students, 2004-08; and Highest GPA award, 2006-07.
Chiping Yeh has been named valedictorian at Memorial High School. He is the son of James and Sandra Yeh. He plans to work at The Victoria College as a math tutor and take online courses. He is planning to attend Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. to major in electrical engineering. His accomplishments include National Merit Scholarship winner; AP Scholar with Distinction award; UIL state meet in computer science; UHV-Victoria Math Awareness Competition winner for four years; and four-year winner at Texas Midcoast Regional Science and Engineering Fair.
Amanda Elise Matocha has been named salutatorian at Memorial High School. She is the daughter of Pastor Barney and Leah Matocha of Victoria. She plans to attend Texas Lutheran University and major in mathematics, continue on to obtain a Master’s degree as well as a teaching certificate. Her accomplishments include received Top 5/Top 10 VISD academic award from fifth through 12th grade; commended scholar on the National Merit Scholarship qualifying test; graduated with 21 college hours obtained through AP exams and dual credit courses; and outstanding department award in math, 2005-06.
Emily Sue Zapalac has been named valedictorian of St. Joseph High School. She is the daughter of Marc and Patty Zapalac of Victoria. She plans to attend the University of Texas-Austin in the Red McCombs School of Business. After obtaining her degree in business, she will either continue school to get a master’s in business administration or move on to law school. Her accomplishments include attending National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C.; secretary of National Honor Society; Who’s Who Among American High School Students; former class vice-president; high honors student over the past four years.
Valerie Rochelle Gilliam has been named salutatorian of St. Joseph High School. She is the daughter of Dan and Jamie Gilliam of Victoria. She plans to attend Texas A&M University and major in biology. She then plans to attend medical school and become a family doctor or nursing school to become a nurse antheist.
Wharton County
Isaac Atwood has been named valedictorian of El Campo High School. He is the son of Robert Atwood and Harry and Delia Allibone. He plans to attend the University of Texas-Austin and major in pre-medical studies and accounting. His accomplishments include president of the National Honor Society; semi-finalist in Coca-Cola scholars; state secretary of the Pan American student forum; and academic excellence award for four years.
Taylor Carinne Lange has been named salutatorian of El Campo High School. She is the daughter of Wesley and Cindy Lange. She plans to attend Texas A&M-College Station and major in accounting. Her accomplishments include graduating with college credit and member of National Honor Society.
Amanda Lynne Larsen has been named valedictorian of Louise High School. She is the daughter of Sharon Larsen of Louise. She plans to attend Wharton County Junior College to complete her basics, and then possibly transfer to the University of Texas-San Antonio to pursue a degree in pharmacy. Her accomplishments include “commended performance” on all exit-level TAKS tests; highest GPA in Algebra II; highest GPA in chemistry; “most dedicated” in Spanish III.
Jessica Ann Sanchez has been named salutatorian of Louise High School. She is the daughter of Anna and David Sanchez of Louise. She plans to attend Wharton County Junior College to complete her basics and then transfer to the University of Houston to major in psychology. Her accomplishments include highest GPA in pre-calculus, English II, and World History; “commended performance” on math and reading exit-level TAKS tests; “most dedicated” in Algebra II; member of National Honor Society.
