Dolly making travelers’ plans almost impossible

Scheduling a vacation on the Texas coast during hurricane season can be a gamble. At least one Victoria couple had to rescheduled their trip to South Padre Island.

Retirees Mary Ellen Reyna and husband Henry Reyna had planned to leave for South Padre Island in their travel trailer on Tuesday but decided to hold off for a few days.

“I can’t wait to get out of here and go do something,” Mary Ellen Reyna said.

But all is not lost.

“We’ve been watching the TV and listening to the current reports. It sounds like by Friday they should have it cleaned up, we’re hoping,” said Mary Ellen Reyna. “We’ve already made reservations and we’ll call the camp grounds and make sure its safe to go over there.

“They were saying that some palm trees fell over and that some roof tops blew off. All of that should be cleaned up and ready for tourists,” she said.

Other area residents may have to change their plans due to the impact of Hurricane Dolly.

Anyone traveling by bus from to the Rio Grande Valley should check with their carrier for cancellations.

“We’re not selling tickets right now because of the hurricane, at least going that way to the Valley,” said Connie Ramero, with the Corder Family Travel Stop.

“Service between San Antonio and Houston into the Rio Grande Valley to McAllen, Brownsville, Reynosa and Matamoros has been discontinued due to the impact of Hurricane Dolly,” according to a recording on the customer service line at the Americanos Bus Lines, the local branch of Greyhound Bus lines.

Travel plans may be interrupted if the roads are closed into Mexico.
