The Wharton girls’ doubles team of Ashley Aaronson and Christie Viktorin jumped out quickly to win the first set 6-3 over Wimberley’s Sara Howard and Morgan Wilkins. But Howard and Wilkins came back to take the next two sets 6-2, 6-3 to advance.
Howard and Wilkins then fell 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 to Abilene Wylie’s Caitlin Cramer and Courtney Cramer in the final.
Both Edna doubles teams dropped their semifinal matches as well.
The girls doubles team of Molly Quinn and Rayne Hafernick fell to eventual state champions Denay Baxter and Samantha Lange of Mason, 6-0, 6-1. Baxter and Lange went on to defeated teammates Chelsea Price and Skyler Wooten 6-1, 6-2 in the final.
Edna’s Jacob Hamilton and Blake Matus fought diligently to the end before dropping a 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (5) decision to Big Lake Reagan County’s Brit Campbell and Joel Hernandez.
Hernandez and Campbell would be turned back 6-3, 6-1 in the final by Lexington’s Ben Spencer and Julian Bexley, who had family connections.
Spencer is the son of coach Rick Spencer and Bexley's father, Keith Bexley, was the first player to reach state under Rick Spencer.
