AUSTIN – The last time the Yoakum Lady Bulldogs found themselves off the medal stand at the UIL state golf tournament was in 2001 when they finished fifth.

That is exactly where the Lady Bulldogs stand after the first round of the Class 3A tournament at the Roy Kizer Golf Course. The final round is set to begin today at 7:30 a.m.

The Lady Bulldogs posted a 340 and were just 12 shots out of third. China Springs and Medina Valley hold the third position at 328, while defending champion Andrews has the first-round lead at 305 and is followed by Monahans at 313.

Despite her team’s position, Lady Bulldogs coach Nicco Brown feels her team can still make a run at China Springs and Medina Valley.

“I felt like it was a good round for us, but I know we can play better and we’re going to try and do that tomorrow,” Brown said. “I had hoped to be in the final four, but it didn’t work out that way.”

Helice Migl paced the Lady Bulldogs with an 82 and was followed by Hope Koenning (84), Brittany Miears (87), Larissa Loredo (87) and Olivia Esparza (95).

Yoakum’s Garrett Nobles carded a 73 and is in sixth place in the Class 3A boys division.
