FRANKFURT, Germany – WBA champion Ruslan Chagaev of Uzbekistan has a viral infection, forcing postponement of his May 31 heavyweight fight against 7-footer Nikolai Valuev of Russia.

Universum promotions said Tuesday it was talking to the WBA about a new date for the bout in Oberhausen.

Chagaev (24-1-0) won a majority decision against Valuev in April 2007. Valuev (48-0-1) won a lopsided decision against former WBO champion Sergei Liakhovich in February.

BERLIN – Serena Williams won her 16th straight match Tuesday, defeating Francesca Schiavone 6-2, 6-3 in the second round of the German Open.

The 20th-ranked Italian fought off repeated break chances throughout the second set before her forehand sailed long and Williams took a 4-2 lead.

The sixth-ranked Williams is chasing her fourth straight WTA title. Her last loss came in early February when Jelena Jankovic won in the Australian Open quarterfinals.

ROME – Roger Federer got by one of his most challenging opponents, defeating Guillermo Canas 6-3, 6-3 Tuesday in the second round of the Rome Masters.

Canas beat Federer twice early last year and was among the few players with a winning record against the top-ranked player. They are now tied 3-3 overall.

“It’s always a tough match against him, so I was happy to win,” Federer said. “I won in Estoril and beat (David) Nalbandian, (Novak) Djokovic and (Gael) Monfils and played a good final against Nadal in Monte Carlo, so I’m on a good run on clay.”

The five previous meetings came on hard courts. This tournament is a clay-court tuneup for the French Open, which begins May 25.

Earlier, Andy Roddick defeated Mardy Fish 6-1, 6-4 in an all-American matchup.

NORFOLK, Va. – A federal judge has denied bond for former track star Tim Montgomery on federal heroin distribution charges.

Montgomery appeared Tuesday in U.S. District Court before Magistrate Judge F. Bradford Stillman. He set a July 9 trial date.

The 33-year-old sprinter was arrested last week on a sealed indictment accusing him of dealing more than 100 grams of heroin in Virginia.

The former 100-meter world-record holder is to be sentenced May 16 in a New York-based check-kiting conspiracy.
