TORONTO – Paul Maurice has been fired as coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs after his team failed to make the playoffs during his two seasons.
Maurice has a year left on his contract and was informed of the decision Wednesday morning. He told The Canadian Press from his Toronto home that he was aware that his dismissal was a possibility.
The Maple Leafs finished 12th in the Eastern Conference and missed a playoff spot by 11 points.

ROME – Rafael Nadal lost for only the second time in his last 105 matches on clay, falling to Juan Carlos Ferrero 7-5, 6-1 in the second round of the Rome Masters.
Nadal, who won the past three French Open titles, was bothered by a blister on his right foot and called for the trainer late in the second set.
Third-ranked Novak Djokovic showed no signs of illness when he cruised past Steve Darcis 6-4, 6-0 in his opening match.
In the Monte Carlo Masters, Djokovic pulled out of his semifinal match against Federer after falling behind 6-3, 3-2. Tests afterward revealed he had strep throat.
Coming off an appearance in the Barcelona Open final, fifth-seeded David Ferrer lost to Radek Stepanek 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. Spanish clay-court specialist Nicolas Almagro upset seventh-seeded David Nalbandian 6-4, 7-5.
Fourth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko beat Croatian wild card Mario Ancic 6-2, 6-2; No. 8 James Blake held off Andreas Seppi of Italy 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-1; and No. 12 Fernando Gonzalez – last year’s runner-up – defeated Russian qualifier Evgeny Korolev 6-3, 6-2.

BERLIN – Defending champion Ana Ivanovic overcame a slow start before defeating qualifier Akgul Amanmuradova 7-6 (0), 6-2 at the German Open.
Fourth-seeded Jelena Jankovic defeated Peng Shuai 7-5, 6-0, and Victoria Azarenka rallied to upset sixth-seeded Anna Chakvetadze 1-6, 7-6 (1), 6-4.
Soccer
ZURICH, Switzerland – Argentina remained No. 1 in the largely unchanged FIFA world rankings, with the United States at No. 21.
With just 20 international soccer games affecting the monthly list, Argentina was followed by Brazil, Italy, Spain and Germany. The Czech Republic, France, Greece, Portugal and the Netherlands completed the top 10.
