ROME – What was once almost unthinkable in tennis now happens more and more often: Roger Federer loses.

The latest defeat came Friday, a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (7) decision to 27th-ranked Radek Stepanek in the Rome Masters quarterfinals.

This was Federer’s sixth loss of the year. The top-ranked Swiss lost only nine matches in all of 2007.

“Usually when I have a lead I don’t let it go, so it’s quite disappointing,” Federer said. “I played so poorly on the big points.”

College football

JACKSON, Miss. – Count Jackson State in on the Ryan Perrilloux sweepstakes.

Coach Rick Comegy said he is attempting to lure the dismissed LSU quarterback to campus for a visit in hopes of signing the troubled player. Perrilloux could play right away if he decides to transfer to a Football Championship Subdivision team.

“We want to be in the ballpark like everyone else who’s recruiting him and see what the situation is and try to see if he fits our program and those type of things,”Comegy said. “We just don’t want to have to play against him.”

Perrilloux was expected to take over the starting job for the defending national champions after serving as a backup to JaMarcus Russell and Matt Flynn the last two seasons. But a series of off-the-field problems led to his dismissal by coach Les Miles a week ago.

NORMAN, Okla. – Third-string quarterback Keith Nichol plans to transfer from Oklahoma after just one season.

“We had a good conversation with Keith and certainly understand his desire to seek an opportunity in another program,” Sooners coach Bob Stoops said in a statement Friday. “He knows that we are supportive of him under any circumstance, whether it’s here or at a different school. We want what’s best for him.”

NFL

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay Packers released Koren Robinson on Friday, the latest setback for the veteran wide receiver trying to resurrect his career after serving an NFL suspension and jail time.

Not long after Green Bay signed the 6-foot-2, 205-pound Robinson in 2006, the league suspended him for a year for alcohol-related problems.

He sought treatment that included attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and taking a drug that would make him sick if he drank alcohol again.

Horse Racing

LEXINGTON, Ky. – It will be at least two weeks before additional information is known about what caused Eight Belles to break down in the Kentucky Derby, the filly’s owner said Friday.

A lab at the University of Kentucky has begun to examine the body of the horse that was euthanized following her runner-up finish in the Derby. Owner Rick Porter said researchers haven’t shared any information except that both front ankles were completely broken.

Porter says they’ve submitted blood and tissue samples for further examination, but it will take at least two weeks to get back full results of the necropsy – or animal autopsy. Trainer Larry Jones has insisted those tests will prove the filly was not on steroids.
