YORKTOWN - Yorkton Police Chief Paul Campos said an arrest has been made by the Texas Rangers of a suspect in the Jan. 23 bank robbery of Prosperity Bank, Yorktown, as well as other area banks including Ganado, La Grange, Odem and others. Campos says the suspect, a person of interest in Victoria, has admitted to at least six or seven area robberies. The Texas Rangers who led the investigation and made the arrest were unavailable for comment and therefore not included in this report.
A former Memorial High School principal will spend a year and a day in federal prison for stealing from another school district. Michael Maples, 45, pleaded guilty in January to stealing federal grant money from the Southeast High School in Oklahoma City while he was principal there. more >>

MATAGORDA - Two people were rescued from the Matagorda jetties after their 20-foot fiberglass boat capsized on Friday at midday. They were stranded on the north jetty until Corpus Christi Coast Guard Search and Rescue airlifted them to the Coast Guard station in Port O'Connor. A spokesman for the USCG Corpus Christi said they were in good condition but suffered cuts and abrasions from barnacles. EMS was waiting to transfer them to Memorial Medical Center in Port Lavaca where they were treated and released. The names, ages and city of residence were not part of the USCG report and therefore were unavailable.
VICTORIA - A 30-year-old Victoria man by police Friday on suspicion of manufacture and delivery of less than one gram of a controlled substance. He is accused of having scales, empty plastic baggies and coffee cups with cocaine residue in his home. The microwave also had cocaine residue splattered inside of it. He is accused of having several smoking pipes and glass bongs, used to smoke marijuana in his home and garage. He is accused of having cocaine rocks in his bedroom in the 3400 block of Flamingo Drive.
VICTORIA - A 34-year-old Victoria man by officers Wednesday on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The man is accused of hitting his wife in the face, pushing her down, then threatening her with an automatic handgun.

Investigators have found few clues to suggest how a 40-year-old Seadrift man died Thursday. Brett Bonnell’s body was found before 5 a.m. Thursday on Old Seadrift Highway. Victoria Crime Stoppers and the Victoria County Sheriff’s Office are seeking information about the people responsible for a theft of copper from a business location near Placedo. The sheriff’s office investigation indicates that at some time between early December 2007 and March 8, one or more people stole nearly $400,000 worth of copper wiring. The theft occurred at a plant site off U.S. Highway 87 South near Ripple Road in the Placedo area. The crime was not discovered until March due the fact that the plant site had been temporarily shut down and was thought to be secure. The wiring ranges in size from about the thickness of a pencil up to 2 inches in diameter. Due to the weight of the copper, it is likely that there was more than one offender. more >>
BLOOMINGTON – A 45-year-old Victoria man and a 44-year-old Bloomington man were injured when one driver attempted to pass in a no-passing zone, Department of Public Safety-Victoria trooper Anthony Owens said. Charles Lampkin, of Bloomington, was driving his Chevrolet Suburban south on Farm-to-Market Road 616 when he passed a vehicle on a bend near Johnson Street – a no-passing zone, Owens said. When coming back into his lane, he struck a Nissan Maxima traveling north driven by Guadalupe Chacon Jr., of Victoria, at 5:45 p.m. more >>
