Browning keeps sheriff position

PORT LAVACA – Sheriff B.B. Browning fought off the challenger to gain the Democratic Party nomination for the county’s top law enforcement job.

Browning of Port Lavaca received 55.4 percent of the vote to defeat challenger Troy Baxter of Point Comfort.

“I’m happy as I can be,”Browning said. “I’ll be working my fourth term for the people of Calhoun County. I appreciate their support.”

In other races, county tax assessor-collector Gloria Ochoa gained the party’s nomination and kept her office, defeating challenger Amanda Anderson Guillen. Ochoa received 80.59 percent of the votes, while Guillen received 19.41 percent. Both live in Port Lavaca.

Calhoun County constable of Precinct 2 Kenneth Wenske, of Port Lavaca, was kept from gaining the party’s nomination by 10 votes. Challenger William “Billy” Williams, of Port Lavaca, received 50.43 percent of the vote to defeat Wenske’s 49.57 percent.

None of these races will be contested in November.
