PORT LAVACA – Reeling in the heaviest trout and redfish also helps bring in the money for Calhoun County students.
Members of the Calhoun County Law Enforcement Association coordinate and work the Saltwater Round-up tournament from the Lighthouse Beach Pavilion. The fishing contest will raise money for at least four scholarships for the county’s high school and college students.
“By giving these kids an extra boost for their education, some of them get their degrees and come back to work in Calhoun County,” association vice president and patrolman Rusty Henderson said.
While the tournament started in 2001 with 19 entrants as a way for public safety personnel to build relations while helping the community, the event is starting to turn into an invitational, association president and Sgt. George Aleman said. The association invited friends and children of public safety personnel. Professional fishermen and/or guides cannot compete.
The public is welcome to come out, Aleman said. He discussed the details.
Q: How many anglers usually enter?
A: “The most we’ve ever had was a little over 100 entries. We get donations from local merchants. Wal-Mart always helps us out–Formosa, Seadrift Coke. Everybody in Calhoun County has helped us as far as the merchants go, and individuals. We had a $100 donation from an individual.”
Q: How many people signed up so far?
A: “Right now we have 20 teams, two people to a team, not including the children.”
Q: How much money will this raise?
A: “It depends on our donations. We’re averaging about $1,200 per tournament after expenses.”
Q: Where do the funds go?
A: “The majority of it goes to scholarships for graduating Calhoun County high school students. Last year we gave four to graduating high school students and one for continuing education for a student already enrolled in college. It is open to any high school or college student from Calhoun County.”
Q:How many scholarships will you give out this year?
A: “We’re giving four this year. Of course, the more money we get in, the more money we’ll hand out.”
Q: When is the weigh-in? Do people usually come watch? Where should they go to watch?
A: “It’ll be at the Lighthouse Pavilion. It’ll probably start around 3 p.m. and go till 5 or 6 p.m. We’ll be serving lunch to all the contestants and volunteers. I think we’re serving fajitas.”
Q: Why a fishing tournament?
A: “Why not? When we originally started this, we knew there were a lot of public safety personnel who would like to have something private where they could compete with each other. It’s just a get-together basically, building new friendships with EMS, firemen and personnel. “
