The money raised will be used as matching funds required for recently awarded grants. Those grants include a $1 million grant from the Economic Development Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce and $345,000 from the Save America’s Treasures program.
“This comes at a critical time in our development,” said Robert Oliver, board chairman, adding that $110,000 of the donations were in the form of pre-event sponsorships.
Oliver also noted that because the donations were used for matching funds for the grants, they were actually a “three-for-one” contribution.
Joe Adams, auctioneer for the live auction, told the sell-out crowd, “It may count 3 to 1, but we’ve got to get the first $1 first. Our job is to try and get as much money for our museum as we possibly can. It’s been a wonderful trip so far, a tremendous effort by a lot of folks. Rest assured that the money you invest here tonight is going to a wonderful cause, the Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum. It’s going to be a reality. It’s coming. So just hold on. It’s going to be great for our community.”
The $1 million grant will be used to construct a 4,500-square-foot addition on the property adjacent to the historic Knights of Pythias Hall that will house the museum proper.
In addition to the live auction, the evening included a chuck wagon dinner catered by Don Strange of San Antonio, a silent auction, a raffle, and music by Red Steagall.
The project also has a new architect, Lewis Fisher of Fisher/Heck Architects of San Antonio.
The previous architect resigned due to health reasons.
“We will begin selecting a general contractor and finalize planning for breaking ground on the new annex by mid-summer,” Oliver said.

Popular pasture golf next fundraiser for Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum
WESTHOFF – Royal Steen Links on Windy Hill near Westhoff will again be the scene of the entertaining pasture golf tournament, a fundraiser for the Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum.
The event, played in the pastures of a 500-acre ranch, is scheduled for Saturday, May 17. It features unusual hole setups, odd obstacles, and outrageous team names and costumes. The last event, held in 2006, was a 13-hole, par 41 course with the shortest hole 71 yards (with a toilet tee off) and the longest 1,120 yards, a par 6.
Places for teams in this fifth fun fundraiser remain. If interested in taking part in the event, contact John Hildebrand at 361-275-9055 or Robert Oliver at 830-236-5533.
