DeWitt County Justice of the Peace Peggy Mayer pronounced Martinez dead at the scene at 2:30 a.m. Candace Lewis of Victoria, who was driving a 2006 Hyundai toward Victoria, hit Martinez who was crossing the road toward Wal-Mart in the middle of the block. Lewis did not see Martinez in time to avoid hitting him and immediately called 911, according to a new release from the Cuero Police Department.
“We assume he was walking home,” said Cuero Police Chief Glenn Mutchler. “He lives in the apartments behind Wal-Mart. He was wearing dark clothing – denim blue jeans, a denim jacket and a dark t-shirt. Of course, it’s very dark that time of night.”
The speed limit is 50 mph at that location on the road.
The accident remains under investigation and no charges have been filed, the police chief said.
Cuero Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene, and the DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Cuero Police.
