Port Lavaca native Samantha Cunningham, whose maiden name is Morgenroth, is attending her husband’s funeral today.

Her husband – 1st Lt. Timothy Cunningham, 26 – died April 23 while stationed in Iraq.

The West Point grad died from wounds suffered when his vehicle rolled into a canal near Baghdad, according to a Fort Campbell, Ky., military obituary.

A 22-year-old soldier from Michigan also died in the rollover.

Cunningham followed in his older brother’s footsteps. Capt. John David Cunningham also joined the Army after graduating from West Point, a funeral home obituary notes.

Cunningham, who was an infantry officer in the 101st Airborne Division, also leaves his 1-year-old daughter, Abigail; parents, John and Cindy Cunningham of Alvin; and three sisters, among other family.

Cunningham married his Alvin High School sweetheart Samantha Morgenroth in May 2006. In April 2007, Abigail was born.

The widow, Cunningham’s parents and other family members did not return phone calls on Wednesday.

South Park Funeral Home in Pearland, which is handling Cunningham’s services, shows the family received visitors Wednesday night.

The funeral is 3 p.m. at the funeral home today.

In an e-mail sent to family, the widow wrote that her faith in God is helping her to cope.

More than 4,000 U.S. military men and women have died in Iraq since March 19, 2003, according to the Associate Press.
