The “Elvis” is the Elvis lamp that bidders traditionally award to some lucky honoree who must display it in their business for a year. Last year the Elvis lamp brought $5,000 to the chamber coffers.
“The lamp was first donated in 1993 by Lee and Kay Tillman from their Gallery of Memories store,” said Kay Lapp, chamber executive director. “It has become a tradition to buy the Elvis lamp, then present it to a well-known business person in the community. The only requirement is that the lamp be displayed visibly in the recipient’s business. Each subsequent year the lamp has been donated back to the chamber for its next auction.”
More than $50,000 has been generated by the annual Elvis lamp auction over the years, said Ronii Diaz, the chamber’s executive assistant.
This year’s theme of “Rockin’ and Rollin’ with the Chamber” was chosen to commemorate Elvis’ heyday. The theme should bring out the white T-shirts, poodle skirts and penny loafers at the Cuero VFW Hall as guests take part in casino games, bingo and bid on silent auction items. Auctioneer Joe Adams will lead the live auction. A turkey and dressing dinner will be served.
“Sock Hop” passes are $25 each. These include dinner and drinks, gaming tokens, and bingo. A raffle will also be held for prizes ranging from a $200 gasoline card to a $1,000 Visa gift card. Raffle tickets are $20 each.
Doors open at 5 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. Casino games will run from 5 to 8 p.m. The live auction begins at 8 p.m. The VFW hall is at 934 U.S. Highway 183 S.
