Mitchell earned 46 percent of the votes. Mathis received 54 percent. Mathis will be unopposed in the Nov. 4 election.
“I knew it would be a close race, but I had a good feeling about my chance of winning,”said Mathis. “I had real good support and a lot of good people helping me. I look forward to serving the people in the county and this is really a great honor.”
In other races, Pat Jewell earned 40 percent of the voted to defeat Larry Pena and Earl White for the Democratic Party nomination for constable Precinct 3. Pena received 29.74 percent and White received 30.10 percent. Jewell will face Republican Becky Aguilera in the general election.
In the constable Precinct 4 race Pedro “Pete” Medina defeated challenger Pete Hale with 51.60 percent of the vote.
In the constable Precinct 1 race, Raymond Green defeated Gordon Dudley with 61.39 percent of the votes.
In the only Justice of the Peace race Jeanette Bell defeated incumbent Robert Matthews. Matthews earned 49.47 percent to Bell’s 50.53 percent.
