BAY CITY – The Bay City treasurer will now report directly to the mayor.

On Saturday, Bay City voters approved a charter amendment that would allow the treasurer to report to the mayor instead of the city council. The vote was 84 for and 25 against.

“The day-to-day operations of the city require a new communications method, this will open up a direct line of communication without the need to have five council members present at the same time,”Bay City Mayor Richard Knapik said.

The voters also approved establishing a planning commission by a vote of 71 to 25.

The charter changes came from recommendations of the 2007 Charter Review Commission, and according to Knapik, will help keep the city on track.

The commission feels that the addition of a planning commission would allow for a speedier and more efficient way for the city to address the concerns with phenomenal growth in certain areas of the county.

Of the city’s almost 10,000 registered voters, only about 100 voted in the special election.

City officials were unavailable for comment late Saturday about the low voter turnout.
