Election officials were still compiling the results of paper and electronic ballots at 11 p.m. Tuesday.
The process was slowed due to some precinct election clerks not filling out paperwork properly before turning in ballots. As a result, the clerks were scattered on the floor of the lobby of the courthouse annex in Wharton filling out papers until all the ballots were turned in, which was shortly before 10 p.m.
The district attorney position was the only contested race for both parties in Wharton County. Josh McCown, who has served as DA for 13 years, and Dawn Allison, a former assistant district attorney under McCown, are running on the Republican ballot. Private attorneys John Roades and John C. Maher Jr. are vying for the Democratic nomination.
