WHARTON – A 31-year-old Wharton man died in a two-vehicle collision Saturday morning.
Jayme Gutierrez was driving his 1988 GMC Sierra pickup south on state Highway 60 when he crossed the center stripe, for unknown reasons, and struck a 2002 Dodge pickup, a dispatcher with the Department of Public Safety in Pierce said.
The Dodge pickup, driven by 40-year-old Darwin Louis Dobesh Jr. of Wharton, was traveling north on the highway and tried to take evasive action, but was still struck 3.4 miles south of Lane City. The Dodge left the roadway to the right and entered the ditch. Dobesh was wearing his seat belt.
Gutierrez, who was also wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:37 a.m. by Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 Cynthia Kubicek. He was taken to Wharton Funeral Home.
Dobesh and his 18-year-old passenger, Karissa Dobesh, were treated for injuries at Gulf Coast Medical Center and released, the dispatcher said. The wreck was investigated by DPS trooper Jose Mena.
