Using the UHV all-online job application process
advertising
Q:I’m currently in the job market and have discovered many universities use an all-online application process. Does UHV have anything like this in place or plans to put such a system in place in the near future?

A:We just put such a system in place last month. Anyone can see what jobs are available at UHV and apply completely online at uhv.simplehire.com.

This makes for a more rapid, efficient and accessible hiring process. Hiring managers can post positions and view applications all online. They get to see them as soon as they are accepted.

Once applicants have created an account, they can log in and see the status of their application as the hiring process progresses.

Q:I heard UHV had some international organization called the SCE. What is it and what does it do?

The Society for Critical Exchange, or SCE, is an international organization dedicated to thinking deep thoughts. Specifically, members of the organization from all sorts of academic backgrounds analyze a specific topic from their own unique area of expertise. For example, the concept of “anonymity” might be looked at by political scientists, literary critics and psychologists.

Each of these experts would submit a paper examining the concept from their area of study. The political scientist might write about how perceived anonymity causes people to be more likely to participate in civil unrest or protest. The literary critic might look at how a work of fiction is viewed differently if the author is unknown. The psychologist may talk about how people can feel a loss of identity when they become nameless in a crowd.

All of these individuals would then come together at one of many symposiums held around the world and discuss these papers together, with each expert contributing to the discussion.

The SCE arrived in Victoria earlier this year. Jeffrey Di Leo, dean of the School of Arts & Sciences, also acts as the group’s executive director. In the near future, the SCE will be bringing symposiums to Victoria. For more information, call the SCE office 361-570-4222 or e-mail sce@uhv.edu.
