MOULTON – An outing in the woods of Lavaca County ended in tragedy Wednesday afternoon when a Shiner man accidentally shot and killed his 14-year-old grandson.

Shortly after 3 p.m., Taylor Michalec of Cibolo was walking in front of his grandfather, Anton Michalec of Shiner, along a creek through the underbrush. The trigger of the grandfather’s 7.62 x 39 semi-automatic rifle snagged on a tree limb or a vine, causing the gun to fire, shooting the teen in the back, said Lavaca County Sheriff Micah Harmon, citing statements from the grandfather and other witnesses.

Also present were the teenager’s father, Patrick Michalec, and a teenaged friend of the deceased, all from Cibolo.

The father called 9-1-1 on his cell phone, but was so distraught he had a hard time giving an exact location, Harmon said.

It took emergency personnel about 25 minutes to locate the scene at 601 County Road 290, about five miles west of Moulton.

When sheriff’s deputies arrived, Taylor was in the bed of a pickup truck. Shiner Emergency Medical Services along with Lavaca County EMS director Debbie Fishback also responded, as did Lavaca County Constable Joe Nieto.

Justice of the Peace Fred Nieto conducted an inquest and pronounced the teenager dead at 4:05 p.m.

“We haven’t closed the investigation, but there is no reason to believe it’s anything but a tragic accident,” Harmon said.

Cibolo is a town of about 3,000, 12 miles east of San Antonio.
