CUERO – Carol Walsdorf, the 23-year-old former Nordheim High School teacher charged in May with having an improper relationship with a student, reached a plea agreement Monday that keeps her out of jail.

Walsdorf pleaded guilty to an improper relationship between educator and student and received five years deferred adjudication, was fined $1,000, must pay court costs and perform 300 hours of community service, said DeWitt County District Attorney Michael Sheppard. She is also banned from teaching and must participate in all counseling recommended by the probation department.

The male student was 17 when the relationship started and turned 18 two days after a letter from the Nordheim school district notified authorities of the situation.

“The age difference was not very great, but it’s a serious offense,” said Sheppard. “Teachers have to respect that boundary. We take it seriously. The family was satisfied with the plea offer. We didn’t think she needed to go to prison, but she did need to quit teaching and have it brought home to her the seriousness of the offense. The plea accomplishes that. The ends of justice have been served.”

“This was a proper resolution to this situation,” said Charles Kvinta Jr., Walsdorf’s court-appointed attorney from Yoakum

The first-year agricultural science teacher had been placed on administrative leave on May 5 after a school district investigation. At the same time, Child Protective Services and the DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office were notified.

Two weeks later she was arrested and charged with improper conduct between educator and student.

The Saturday night before her arrest she and the student were involved in a car crash on Gilbert Mueller Road, and Walsdorf was charged with driving while intoxicated.

She also pleaded guilty to that charge and was fined $800 plus court costs. She received 180 days probation and must attend driver safety classes, said County Attorney Ray Reese.
