MEYERSVILLE – Deputies arrested a 15-year-old boy Friday who had escaped from the Victoria County Juvenile Detention Center Thursday night.

The boy might have found a way to climb into a pipe-filled section of the walls, Victoria County Sheriff T. Michael O’Connor said. From there, it seems he climbed to the roof, O’Connor said.

He escaped about 6 p.m. Thursday, O’Connor said.

Police and deputies searched the area around the detention center but could not find the boy. Deputies called DeWitt County authorities because the boy’s family lives there, he said.

“You try to be as quick as possible,” when tracking escaped inmates, O’Connor said.

The boy told DeWitt County deputies he stole a car in Victoria, Sheriff Jode Zavesky said. The boy drove the car to a relative’s home in Meyersville, Zavesky said.

He was arrested there without a struggle about 7 a.m. Friday.

The boy was scheduled to move to a Texas Youth Commission facility Friday, O’Connor said, which might have been the motivation for his escape.
