Using electric lawn equipment is better
advertising
Q. Does using electronic lawn equipment instead of gasoline-powered equipment help keep Victoria’s air cleaner and healthier?

A. Yes, electric lawn equipment is “friendly” to air quality. Electric lawn equipment does not use fuels that emit the chemicals that cause ground level ozone pollution in Victoria. Victoria’s ground level ozone affects the respiratory health of many residents. Gasoline-powered lawn equipment produces about 5 percent of our local air pollution.

Your question could not have come at a better time. Through May 13, Texas Backyard store located at the H-E-B Plus on North Navarro Street is offering discounts on electronic lawn equipment products made by Poulan and Weedeater, including string trimmers and edgers, blower vacuums, hedge trimmers and chainsaws with $10 off using an in-store coupon.

For more information about how electronic lawn equipment can help keep Victoria’s air cleaner, contact the City Environmental Services Department at 361-485-3230.

Q. Who mows the grass between the sidewalk and the street? Who mows the grass that grows on a sidewalk or in the street?

A. The homeowner or owner of a parcel of land in Victoria is responsible for mowing the grass between the sidewalk and the street, and must cut any grass that grows on the sidewalk or street adjacent to the parcel. Section 10-41 of the city code states that it shall be unlawful for any owner of any lot or parcel of land or portion thereof, occupied or unoccupied, improved or unimproved, within the corporate limits of the city to permit weeds or grass to grow to a height greater than 12 inches upon said premises. It also adds that it shall be unlawful for any owner of any lot or parcel of land or portion thereof, occupied or unoccupied, improved or unimproved, within the corporate limits of the city to permit weeds, grass or any plant to grow in, upon or across any sidewalk or street adjacent to the lot or property.

The entire Victoria City Code is available online at www.victoriatx.org. Under the “City Government” section click on “City Code” or call the City Secretary Office at 485-3040.

Q. Does the city issue the new vehicle registration stickers for automobiles?

A. I get this question almost every day. No; motor vehicle registration stickers are issued by the Victoria County Tax Assessor/Collector at 205 N. Bridge St., Suite 101.

You can visit their Web site at http://www.victoriacountytx.org/departments/tax/tax.htm for details on how to renew your vehicle registration online, or call at 576-3671 for additional information.

Q. Does the Victoria Police Department still have a ride-along program?

A. Yes. Applications for the ride-along program can be downloaded from the city Web site and are good for up to four rides in the calendar year. The link for the application is http://www.victoriatx.org/police/administration/ridealong.htm. You will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer to download an application. Fill out the application and return it to the police department and they will process the application. If you don’t have Internet access, applications can be picked up at the police substation in Victoria Mall or the police station downtown. To have an application mailed to you, call the community services division at 361-572-6868.

Send your questions and comments for any city department or activity to City of Victoria, Public Information Office, P.O. Box 1758, Victoria, Texas 77902, or pio@victoriatx.org.
