Some may say those numbers are pretty good to have that kind of representation, but on the backside, it will be the first time since 1993 that the area is not sending a boy’s team to the state tournament.
During the past 14 years the area had been represented by at least one team and on two occasions three teams were able to advance to Austin.
This year the area was thrown a shutout, but it came on the very last pitch, to use a baseball term.
Rice Consolidated just missed an opportunity to carry on the streak when they tied for second at the Region IV-2A tournament only to lose in a playoff.
The Raiders tied with Franklin after posting a two-day 684 and coming from 17 strokes down after the first day.
Cuero’s four-year run to the state tournament was also snapped, while Yorktown was denied a return trip as well after representing the area last year.
Three individuals will make the Austin trip this week with Flatonia’s Nancen Kainer and Boling’s Douglas Mach teeing it up in the Class 1A and 2A tournaments respectively on Monday and Tuesday. Yoakum’s Garrett Nobles takes to the course on Thursday and Friday to compete in the Class 3A tournament.
Kainer carded rounds of 78-79-157 and won a playoff to finish second at the Region IV-1A tournament, while Mach shot 70-77-147 to place second at the Region IV-2A tournament.
Nobles advanced after a fifth-place finish at the Region IV-3A tournament with rounds of 78-75-153.
On the girl’s side, Schulenburg’s Samantha Bohac will also be competing as an individual in the Class 2A tournament.
Shooting 84-82-166 Bohac finished third in the Region IV-2A event.
Teamwise, Yoakum will be making its 27th straight trip to Austin and will be joined by Edna (second straight) and Flatonia (fourth in six years).
Tournament action tees off Monday and Tuesday in Class 1A (Morris Williams Golf Course), Class 2A (Roy Kizer) and Class 4A (Jimmy Clay) at 7:30 a.m. Class 3A (Roy Kizer) and Class 5A (Jimmy Clay) will tee it up on Thursday and Friday beginning at 7:30 a.m. each day.
Shooting their age
