The Indianettes had to fight back from an early 3-0 deficit to down Fort Worth Bethesda Christian, 6-5, to win their second state championship in a row and the third in six years at Mary Hardin-Baylor’s Dee Dillon Field on Saturday afternoon.
Sara Grahmann drove in the winning run in the top of the seventh inning with a fielder’s choice that scored Stephanie Tobola. Tobola, who went 3-for-4 with three runs, led off the inning with a double and moved to third on Kendra Krupala’s sacrifice bunt.
Sarah Michalcik (11-3) got the win in relief to notch her second victory of the tournament. Michalcik relieved starter Emily Gallia in the bottom of the third inning after Gallia had walked the lead-off hitter, Tallie LeDoux, to start the inning.
Michalcik gave up two runs, sevens hits, no walks and struck out four the rest of the way.
“Sarah came in and did a great job,” Indianette coach Pat Henke said. “She kept us in the game.
“We played great defense and had just enough offense to win.”
The Indianettes (18-11) turned a big double play in the bottom of the seventh inning. Regan McArthur led off with a single but LeDoux hit a grounder back to Michalcik to start a 1-6-3 double play.
Kelsea Svochak followed with a double and the Indianette weren’t still out of the woods but Michalcik got Madeline Moren to ground out to second baseman Heather Saulnier to end the game.
The Lady A’s took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an error, three walks, a hit and an infield out.
Sacred Heart got the lead-off hitter on in the first three innings but failed to score before finally breaking through in the fourth inning. Back-to-back singles by Tobola and Krupala began the frame and Kadee Bludau’s sacrifice bunt scored Tobola. However, Krupala was later stranded on third base after the next two batters struck out.
The Indianettes took a 5-3 lead with a four-run fifth. Gallia ripped a two-run double, Krupala hit a sacrifice fly and Bludau’s single up the middle drove in the final run of the inning.
Bethesda Christian (20-11) pulled even at 5-5 on a double by Gabbie Goodling in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Sacred Heart had 10 hits in the game with Saulnier going 2-for-4. Casey Leopold and Michalcik also added hits.
