LA GRANGE – A former Schulenburg teacher/coach has pleaded guilty to two counts of improper relations between an educator and a student.

Patrick Edward Colon, 29, of La Grange was being held in the Fayette County Jail on Thursday awaiting transfer to state prison after entering the plea Wednesday at the Fayette County Courthouse in La Grange as part of an agreement with the district attorney’s office.

Colon was sentenced to 10 years on the first count and received 10 years deferred adjudication probation on the second count, both of which are second degree felonies.

Colon was placed on administrative leave by the Schulenburg school district in September after allegations of an improper sexual relationship surfaced and an investigation was conducted by the Schulenburg Police Department.

Colon was indicted on two counts of improper relations between an educator and a student and one count of sexual assault of a child in November and was freed on $30,000 bail.

The indictments alleged Colon engaged in sexual conduct with students on March 2, 2005, and June 1, 2006.

In Texas, it is against the law for a teacher to have an improper relationship with a student even if a student is over 16 years old.

Fayette County District Attorney Peggy Supak said as part of the agreement Colon has permanently surrendered his teaching certificate and has agreed to have no contact with the victims.

“He will not ever be back in the classroom legally,” Supak said. “As part of the agreement, he will not be allowed to teach, coach or be in any kind of leadership role or in any way involved with youth activities.”

Supak said she discussed the agreement with the victims and their families.

“One victim gave full approval and the other never gave a nod and never said no,” Supak said. “One victim was in court and the other was not, but people deal with things differently.”

Colon attended high school in Weimar and was the winning pitcher when the Wildcats won the Class 2A state baseball championship in 1996 and ’97. He played baseball at Texas Lutheran University before becoming an assistant baseball and football coach at Schulenburg. He took over as head baseball coach in 2007.

“There are a lot of different nuances built into it,” Supak said of the plea agreement. “The bottom line is I think this situation gives us a better hold on him. I’m pretty satisfied with the terms and the victims didn’t have to get on the stand and testify. It’s quite worth it to me for that.”
