Editor’s note: The school and city elections will be Saturday, May 10. To help voters learn more about the contested races in their communities, the Advocate will profile those races. Today’s candidates are seeking the District 5 seat on the Victoria school board.

Name:Tami Keeling

Age: 46

Office Seeking: Victoria Independent School District, Trustee District 5

City and County of Residence: Victoria, Texas

Current Occupation: Housewife

Why do you want to serve in this office?

I have the time to commit to this type of community service and give it the attention it deserves. I am experienced, trained and dedicated to following through on the bond and the reformation of VISD. I have been an impartial voice for positive progress that benefits all students. I support Mr. Moore and the community vision for what this district can become. I take great pride in our district and this community and believe in VISD.

What three issues facing this office do you feel are the most important and how will you approach them?

How will the district spend your $159 million? It’s my view that we build and repair schools first. I pledge to keep VISD’s primary educational mission as my top priority.

New, smaller schools are exciting, but buildings alone will not fix everything. I support competitive pay for our teachers and staff and changes in the current discipline system in order to provide a safe and productive learning environment for our children.

Name: Dr. Charlie Jaynes

Age: 61

Office Seeking: VISD School Board Trustee, District 5.

City and County of Residence: Victoria, Victoria County.

Current Occupation: Physician specializing in obstetrics and gynecology. Current President of Victoria Women’s Clinic Associates.

Why do you want to serve in this office?

I want to end the bickering and micromanagement on the school board, and my only personal agenda is to make VISD the best it can be. I want my four grandsons and all our children to have top-quality educations, and there are currently some real challenges facing our schools. As a businessman, I want to create common-sense solutions for these problems. Our community deserves safe, quality schools where teachers can teach and students can learn.

What three issues facing this office do you think are the most important and how will you approach them?

1. Budget: Taxpayer dollars must be used wisely, efficiently, and effectively, with the bond monies approved by the public being spent only on appropriate projects.

2. Accountability: As a businessman, I believe this is vital. Building up a vibrant, quality school system is the responsibility of everyone in it, beginning with the board.

3. Discipline: We must create a safe learning environment for students and teachers, and uniformly apply discipline policies across all campuses.
