Texana to host ‘Weekend of Speed’
advertising
Speed junkies in the Victoria area may be in for a treat this Fourth of July weekend.

Texana Raceway Park will kick off its “Weekend of Speed” on Friday night when the American Sprint Car Series will visit Edna’s dirt oval track for the first time.

These V-8 powered winged sprints are a favorite among race fans and they should be racing hard with a $2,000 purse on the line.

To get things rolling for the big event, the raceway, along with Kentucky Fried Chicken/Taco Bell in Edna, will host a two-hour live remote with FM radio station KIXS (107.9) from 2 to 4 p.m. and fans will be able to see some of the sprint cars on display.

According to Texana’s press release, these cars are capable of posting speeds of up to 120 mph on the straightaways, which is basically 120 mph in less than 1/8 of a mile.

“We anticipate a great show for the fans with the first-ever visit of the full-size sprint cars at Texana Raceway Park,” track owner Bruce Tesch said. “We’ve wanted to host an event like this for a while and, after getting on the waiting list, we were selected for this special event.”

Also running with the sprints will be modifieds and limited modifieds.

On Saturday night, classic dwarf cars, mini-stocks, bombers, hot-stock trucks and super stocks will do battle in the dirt during the Fender Class Clash.

A three-tiered event consisting of a blindfold race, reverse race and demolition derby will be included in the lineup.

Texana Raceway Park is located two miles south of Edna on State Highway 111. Racing starts at 7:30 p.m. each night.

Firecracker 3000

I-37 Raceway in Pleasanton will host its first Firecracker 3000 on Saturday night.

“If you think the drivers race hard on a regular race night, you’re right,” track director Jim Knudtson said in a recent press release. “But that’s nothing compared to how hard they’ll race with a thousand bucks on the line for first place and we’re offering that for three classes at the Firecracker 3000.”

Several Advocate-area drivers have appeared at I-37 in recent weeks to try out the track, so with added purse money, the track expects to attract a larger-than-normal field of cars and drivers for this weekend’s event.

Gates open at 4 p.m. and hot laps begin at 8 p.m.
