Ike evacuees may still be in town

There could be as many as 800 Hurricane Ike evacuees still in Victoria and a guide is being distributed to aid them in getting help. “It will be very helpful,” said Rita Williams with the Salvation Army. “At least they will have addresses and they will know where to go to and they’ll know what each agency can help them with.” more >>

Helping food bank after Ike

PORT LAVACA – Calhoun County residents boarded a bus Sunday knowing only one thing: they wanted to help. A group of 20 people sacrificed 13 hours of their day to sort food and distribute ice at the Houston Food Bank, Mary Nevarez, who coordinated the effort, said. Calhoun residents can give to Ike efforts

PORT LAVACA – Calhoun County residents have several ways to help out with Hurricane Ike relief efforts. The Red Cross needs canned goods, clothes, diapers, toys, bottles, tooth brushes/paste, deodorant, cleaning supplies, trash bags or any necessity used on a daily basis. The items will be shipped to the Victoria Red Cross on Sept. 29 and redistributed to the Houston area. Drop off supplies at Little Friends Daycare at the corner of Oren and Bauer streets, the Port Lavaca Wave, the Port Lavaca Chevy Dealership, the Calhoun County Courthouse lobby and Prosperity Bank. more >>

Invista donates $1 million for relief

The parent company of Invista announced Friday it will donate $1 million for Hurricane Ike relief efforts. Koch Industries Inc.’s donation will go to the Texas Disaster Relief Fund, the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross for efforts in Hardin, Harris, Jefferson and Orange counties, an Invista news release stated. more >>

Faith Academy helps fellow school clean up from Ike

A Victoria Christian school loved its neighbor Wednesday. About 30 students from Faith Academy woke up at the break of dawn to help Pine Drive Christian School in Dickinson clean up debris left by Hurricane Ike so classes could commence on Monday. more >>

Jail evacuated prior to Ike

The Victoria County Jail closed for at least two days last week in preparation for Hurricane Ike. Deputies evacuated almost 300 inmates and temporarily released about 200 more. “This is unprecedented,” Sheriff T. Michael O’Connor said. “We just really haven’t had the risk of that big of a storm before.” more >>
