“It will be very helpful,” said Rita Williams with the Salvation Army. “At least they will have addresses and they will know where to go to and they’ll know what each agency can help them with.”
The guides are available at the Salvation Army office at 1306 N. Louis St. and at the American Red Cross Crossroad Chapter office at 2805 N. Navarro St.
It includes information on everything from how to get a temporary library card and access to Victoria Public Library computers to getting a free tetanus shot at the health department or aid with prescription drugs.
“I think it’s a wonderful piece of information,” said Linda May with the Red Cross. “I’m just sorry we didn’t have this when the evacuees first came down.”
There are no plans to open an evacuee shelter in Victoria because of the proximity to the coast and the possibility of a hurricane affecting this area.
Evacuees are being encouraged to take advantage of the state evacuation hubs in San Antonio, Austin or Dallas. They have the resources to provide for the long-term needs of evacuees, unlike Victoria.
But the guide covers resources available until the evacuees can find long-term support.
The Red Cross has registered 402 families, May said, and she estimated half may still be in Victoria. That could account for a total of 800 people if each family has an average of four members.
The number of people registering with the Red Cross has slowed.
“But I feel like if they stay here they are eventually going to run out of food and need more clothing,” May said. “So many may get to go home, but they don’t have gasoline money.”
She doesn’t know if anyone has received money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency that might help evacuees buy fuel, she said. While the Red Cross can make referrals for food and clothing, May is not aware of anyone offering fuel vouchers.
“That’s one of the biggest needs right now,” May said.
