Matt Maples said,

"Yeah Saladbar, you own a few acres and 1/3 of a house (according to VCAD), hardly the reason to post 20 times a day on VA. Settle down, you don't live here. Period. You are not a Victoria resident. Comment on your own city of residence, they have a few problems, too. You started the namecalling with Ms. Ramos with no provocation. @Robert Jachen, or B.J. as you're probably known in close circles, don't be the D-bag spelling police. Nobody likes that person." - 2 hours, 17 minutes ago

Sacrifices honored in Port O'Connor

Sacrifices honored in Port O'Connor

Dana McGilvray Buck said,

"Mr. Dash, the support and love we have for you and your fellow soldiers - true heroes to all of us - cannot be expressed in words. As someone who has ridden in escort of all the buses several times, I can tell you from personal experience that the only thing that rivals the emotion I feel for the soldiers is the emotion I felt when visiting the Arizona Memorial in Honolulu, HI. From the little boys (and girls) in their starched blue jeans waving a small American flag on the side of the road, to the elderly man standing ramrod straight, holding the salute as all the buses and hundreds of motorcycles roar past, to the crowds lining the streets of the small towns, it is truly a humbling experience to be part of this annual event. For those of you who experienced Friday's event here in Victoria, with I think 12-15 buses from Houston and another five or so from Fort Hood, please be aware we escorted another SIX BUSLOADS of soldiers beginning at 5:30 am on Saturday morning when we left from SAMMC in San Antonio to ride to Port O'Connor. This was the largest event to date. I cannot even begin to imagine the emotional and physical trauma borne by the men and women of the armed services. I will joyfully endure heat, wind, getting up early, the discomfort of riding non-stop for three hours each and every year, on the chance that my participation in some small way, can repay our heroes. And in my mind, at least, I think of the heroes of other wars and police actions that did not get such events, specifically those from Vietnam. I have overheard young people who don't understand why all the hoopla is made each year...if you could just go to Port O'Connor and see the soldier with a prosthetic leg being helped onto a boat, or see the tears on the cheeks of the vets when they get off the buses at Faith Family and see all the faces waiting to greet them, and shake their hands, or just touch their shoulder in passing. These men and women have given so much of their mental and physical wellness just to defend our nation from "all enemies, foreign and domestic" so we can live to enjoy the freedoms we value to much. Go to the sand-sculpture at the community center in Port O'Connor to see a truly inspiring work of art, including the inscription of names of the fallen, the wounded and the MIA/POWs from the area. Barring rain and/or a severe windstorm, the sculpture will be there for a month or two before it disintegrates. To all the soldiers at Warrior's Weekend, and to soldiers everywhere, you will have my eternal gratitude for your selfless dedication and sacrifice. Thank you." - 11 hours, 17 minutes ago

Community remembers loss of 19 immigrant lives

David Mundy said,

"Open them gates and let freedom ring ... sure. Let's reform immigration policy, absolutely. We need to make it easier, faster and cheaper for people who legitimately want to become American citizens to do so. I also have no problem with a guest-worker program. But 35 percent of illegal aliens are already convicted felons in their country of origin, many of them sex offenders -- is that the kind of freedom you want to ring? Mexico is intentionally encouraging its "undesirables" to cross our border illegally because the corruption and anarchy of the country prohibit any real chance of development even though Mexico's natural resources are the equal of the US's. Mexico is waging demographic warfare against us. Perhaps you humanitarians can explain the fact that if you cross the border unlawfully INTO Mexico, you'll spend two years in prison and THEN get deported. " - 11 hours, 53 minutes ago

Pro-Con: Who should make end-of-life care decisions?

Margaret Daniels said,

"What happened to Patients' Rights? They sign an Advance Directive for Physicians, they certify a POA, and the DNR is available for terminal illness, and to prevent that person from dying over and over again. These are things for the patient and his/her family to discuss. The doctor is not allowed into that conversation anymore then a family member is allowed to ask questions or make suggestions to a doctor. Aren't they making enough money for their vacations without torturing terminally ill patients to stay alive when they are suffering? Live the experience, then decide -- I prefer we do not make it a legislative issue." - 18 hours, 18 minutes ago

Traffic Tip: Stopping, standing, or parking prohibited in certain places

Henry Wood said,

"...and you could continue on with the violation of illegal lane change because that is the reason those drivers are stopping instead of yielding into the traffic flow....the drivers wait until they can go straight across three lanes of oncoming traffic into the turning lane for the school. They are almost as bad as the ones that stop in the middle of 87 at the school intersection because they don't want to wait until the next light. Oh well one more week and then it will be forgotten until fall........" - 19 hours, 7 minutes ago

Reader disagrees with using term 'immigrants'

Brenda Lopez said,

" I believe that this is really not necessary. Illegal, immigrants, undocumented aliens, legals, u.s citizens, whatever the word the advocate used doesn't matter. What matters is that 19 human beings lost their lives. And that should be respected. Please do not disrespect them. Be a little more human itself and find it in your heart to stop being so close minded. And Fidela, i hope President Obama gets the job done too. " - 23 hours, 30 minutes ago
