A car is stolen in Texas every five and a half minutes. Enrolling in the HEAT program and having your vehicle VIN etched will greatly reduce your chances of becoming a victim of vehicle theft.

HEAT (Help End Auto Theft): HEAT is a statewide vehicle registration program sponsored by the Texas Department of Public Safety that assists law enforcement officials in identifying stolen vehicles.

Any vehicle owner in Texas can register their vehicle in the HEAT program. A vehicle registered with the HEAT program will have decals placed on the front and rear window. Statistics show that most vehicles are stolen between the hours of 1:00am and 5:00am. These decals authorize law enforcement officers to stop the vehicle between 1:00am and 5:00am, anywhere in Texas, to verify ownership.

VIN Etching: Every vehicle is equipped with a Vehicle Identification Number plate on the dash board. These plates can and are being replaced with new, fake plates by thieves. Stealing a vehicle with VIN etched windows means a thief will have to dispose of over 100 pounds of glass. The thief sees the etching and moves to an easier vehicle. Etching may also increase the resale value of your vehicle. In some instances, VIN Etching will entitle you to a reduction on your insurance (check with your insurance agent).

You will need to have a current driver’s license; automobile insurance and the registered owner must be present.
