Deadline for Exelon licensing approaches
advertising
Area workers continue to dig and prod to meet Exelon Nuclear’s self-imposed application deadline.

In September, the nuclear company plans to submit its Combined Construction & Operating License application, the next step toward securing a proposed nuclear plant in Victoria County, said Bill Scott, Exelon’s director of Texas public affairs.

“All systems are go,” Scott said. “Although there are a lot of people working pretty hard right now to meet that deadline.”

Scott spoke to about 50 people at Tuesday morning’s Victoria Partnership meeting regarding the application process and upcoming “scoping meetings” the Nuclear Regulatory Commission will host in Victoria.

The meetings allow the public a chance to ask questions about the application process and licensing, Scott said.

The first one will be from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Aug. 7 at the Victoria Community Center.

It’s important that the public attend, said Dale Fowler, president of the Victoria Economic Development Corporation.

A large crowd will show Exelon and the NRC that Victoria is interested, Fowler noted, and the plant hasn’t chosen to build here yet.

“We’re still selling,” Fowler said. “Victoria is still selling, in my opinion, to Exelon.”

Several issues come into play regarding the decision to build, Scott said.

The loan guarantee must go through, he said, additional analysis at the proposed site will continue and the presidential election will play a key role.

“Both candidates have slightly different views on things,” he said, declining further detail. “They have various views on nuclear.”
