Sometimes things aren’t what they seem

- Matthew 6:24

Today, while beach combing along the shore, I was invited to go sailing on a lovely, 16-foot Hoby Cat sailboat.

This thrilled me because I had never sailed on a Hoby Cat before, and this stranger had chosen me out of all of the other beach people to go along. I was complimented until I discovered that all he needed was some weight on the opposite side of the boat, thus, me.

Soon I had gathered up my broken pride along with piles of ropes, riggings, sacks and sails and we were ready to sail — almost.

Just as he had concluded telling me what I needed to know if I fell overboard or was disabled by a swinging boom, his real friends showed up. It was a couple from Houston and their beautiful, bronzed, blond, buxom lady friend who seemed to know all about him and sailing. It didn’t take me long to figure out that she was the pre-determined, preferred “weight for the opposite side of the boat” that he had previously referred to.

As they sailed off with “red sails in the sunset,” that I had painfully carried and helped rig, I got out my rod and reel and one minute later I was ready to fish. I really wanted to hook a fish. I hated being the only thing on the beach to get hooked and thrown back today.

Dear Lord, You have been my Master and have brought me safe thus far. You, I trust.
