Most people in Victoria and surrounding counties are familiar with the car dealer who comes on and invites potential buyers to come see him "in booming Port Lavaca."

Turns out, he's not just blowing exhaust fumes.

Port Lavaca is booming, thanks to a bunch of adventurous and positive-thinking entrepreneurs who are fast revitalizing historic downtown Port Lavaca into an eclectic array of unique shops and restaurants.

And tourist attractions such as the Alcoa fishing pier and Peninsula Park and the city on the coast a half-hour from Victoria is drawing a lot of attention - and customers.

New businesses are also going up along state Highway 35, but business owners like Ann Smith of Ann Smith's Dance Studio chose to locate in the downtown because, "I like the atmosphere, the artistry that everybody has to offer."

Other ventures, from Tropical Furniture to Funky Divas, have decided downtown Port L is the place to be.

And, it's also attractive because buildings are available and affordable for small business owners just getting started.

Real estate agent Jan Regan told Advocate reporter Tara Bozick that Port Lavaca might be a little behind Victoria in its downtown revitalization, but, "We're just a little bit behind them, and we're working on it one building at a time and one business at a time."

Some larger buildings are getting renovated to improve the overall look of downtown Port Lavaca. The old First State Bank building for one, and the Fabrygel building, which was donated to the local theater and received a facelift of its own.

With all this being added to the great work done to establish Lighthouse Beach, tourists from near and far have great reasons to go and have some fun at Port Lavaca.

Make that "booming" Port Lavaca.
