Editor, the Advocate:
Now the subject of John McCain's age has come up. He's too old they say. Same story was put out about Ronald Reagan, and he was a great president — a very popular one at that. Our armed forces never looked better. The Berlin Wall came down. Maybe 9/11 would not have happened had the armed forces been kept up. The first Bush kept them that way. Then comes Wild Bill Clinton for eight years and we all know what happened next. When Bush No. 2 took over, our defense was weak. He was called to lead us out of despair. So far, no more 9/11s but plenty of other bad happenings: Katrina, fires, floods, etc. Still he has kept the course, no wild promises. Never has Bush No. 2 said it would be easy. We need an older man in the oval office. McCain has proven his loyalty to America. If you read the Bible you will notice that the older men were called upon to lead the flock.
In Barack Obama all I see is a contradiction. Him denying, after all of these years of listening to his preacher, that all of that ranting and raving did not influence him. Hillary Clinton, with bullets flying all around her in Bosnia, really made me laugh. Hillary, it would be more believable if you said that it happened in America, and it was instigated by a vast right wing conspiracy. In fact, my own trigger fingers get itchy thinking about it. John McCain, we need you. An older man, a man who has proven he lives his country and not himself.
Wayne John, USN, ret.

Barney! How is that minimum wage job?
May 5, 2008 at 11:14 p.m.Karie, I am sure, has heard of a deer in the head lights. That's what Bush looked like while reading "The Pet Goat." Or was he surprised at all.....hmmmm......Dear? Is this an episode of "Leave It To Beaver."
I just read this on the NBC blog. I have always said the Iraq war was not about oil,is McCain telling us it was?
"My friends, I will have an energy policy that we will be talking about, which will eliminate our dependence on oil from the Middle East that will -- that will then prevent us -- that will prevent us from having ever to send our young men and women into conflict again in the Middle East, McCain said.
http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archiv...
I hope he was talking about future conflicts in the middle east ,because if the war was directly about oil, then it is just another nail in the coffin.
May 2, 2008 at 4:40 p.m.Thanks Karie2 worthwhile reading and informative . Makes you understand how Abu Ghraib happened, torture, and all post Iraq invasion mistakes.
May 2, 2008 at 2:11 p.m.But now I will have to buy the book.
Oh please make this thread about the 9/11 mistakes . That barely in office excuse, by the right wing will not cut it. According to the 9/11 Commission Report (right in front of me) plenty of blame to pass around both administrations. It all starts with the Phoenix memo, Richard Clarke's testimony that the administration was not interested in Al Qaeda, that August 6 memo, and both administrations failure to investigate and prosecute the USS Cole incident . Richard Clarke apologized to the United States for his failure, but he is only one. Plenty of details in the 9/11 Commission Report.
The 9/11 Commission Report has his flaws, because they allowed the president and vice president to testify together and not under oath.
May 2, 2008 at 1:37 p.m.To Mike and anyone interested:
Here's an interesting excerpt from Ric Sanchez's memoir, Wiser in Battle: A Soldier's Story about Rumsfeld and the liar he is. It has nothing to do with the thread, but it is another anecdote about the screwups by the Administration.

May 2, 2008 at 1:23 p.m.Everything I have stated in that post has been documented by the 911 Commission and the website PNAC. PNAC was signed by the ultra-conservatives. I read the PNAC website. It was definitely a Middle East warmongering agenda. Ashcroft was questioned by the media about his sudden change of travel plans to private jets and military aircraft prior to 911. These are not conspiracies, but I can see that you haven't read the Commission report.
If I want conspiracies, I chase down loony Pat Robertson's story on Hillary killing Vince Foster.
Oh yeah: Don't call me "dear".
May 2, 2008 at 1:05 p.m." as Bush being asleep at the wheel on 9/11."
The report was right in front of his face. NSA Rice and Bush and Cheney chose to ignore it. Attorney General Ashcroft was so scared he stopped flying commercial airlines the month before. They knew it was coming, and they knew it would involve the commercial airlines.
People who have left the administration have stated that Rumsfeld and Cheney and Bush were wanting to invade Iraq the first day in office. It's a shame there wasn't more exposure of PNAC, Project For a New American Century before the Iraq invasion. Last I heard, they took down their website because of the inflammatory language about needing another Pearl Harbor event to get the American public riled up.
Bush and company deliberately turned their heads and ignored the warnings. That level of treason is good enough to turn me into a "Bush-hater." I don't understand why anyone could still approve of his presidency.
May 1, 2008 at 10:24 p.m.Perfect Military? Please..Ft. Bragg......I am sure that is Clinton's fault.
May 1, 2008 at 6:43 p.m.Thanks Mike, no one said PERFECT. There is no such thing.
Osama is no longer the target Vet, it's Obama.
May 1, 2008 at 2 p.m.What is that War Czar doing, besides playing battleship off the coast of Iran?
Iraq and Afghanistan are two different military operations.
As General Shinseki told the Armed Forces committee, an invasion of Iraq would require about 500,000 troops, which we had at the time in order to maintain the peace, seal off the borders and save lives. His advice was disregarded by Rumsfeld.
Iraq was a war of choice (not a viable threat), so we had plenty of time to produce body armor, train the troops, and get what we needed without blaming the previous administration. The so-called peace dividend plan, was done by George H. W. Bush (Cheney was in charge of it) and Bill Clinton.
In Iraq, the insurgents are using Radio Shack IEDs, so cruise missiles, aircraft carriers, and bunker busters are of very little use in a counterinsurgency war. Very few if any blame the Clinton administration for the fiasco in Iraq.
I took the ragman statement to mean that the military was adequate for the temporary victory in Afghanistan.I did not see the word perfect.
May 1, 2008 at 1:43 p.m."Taking a detour to Iraq without an exit plan, body armor, enough troops, or armored vehicles was not the fault of the Clinton administration."
Not the fault of the Clinton Administration. Well just before Ragman said the military was perfect because of the Clinton. Not enough body armor,, troops, armored vehicles. We, uh, those are signs of an administration that destroyed the military by 1/3, not built it up like the previous administrations.
You go to war with the army you have.....or was left with.
Check, mate.

May 1, 2008 at 12:55 p.m.Toni Ann, I understand that one of McCain's first duties,if elected president will be to appoint a Depends Czar and an Aricept Czar.
In other news: This is the 5th anniversary of "Mission Accomplished". Where's Osama?
Sandwichh needs to seriously read about the invasion of Afghanistan....It was not that long ago.Any president would have invaded Afghanistan without looking at the polls. It was a not a stroke of genius (that's just right wing talking points)…… The plan to use the Northern Alliance, about 300 American troops, and the CIA to overtake the Taliban was brilliant. We did not need a large military presence, so all the spare parts, training, and fuel is just garbage. As a comedian Cedric the entertainer said" We bombed Afghanistan for days and did about $1.86 worth of damage. " The armchair generals do not take into consideration; we were fighting farmers with AK-47s, so we did not need three battleships, two or three tank divisions and all of the United States Air Force. After we overtook Afghanistan, we had the support of all our allies. Taking a detour to Iraq without an exit plan, body armor, enough troops, or armored vehicles was not the fault of the Clinton administration.
May 1, 2008 at 8:55 a.m.Ugh...
This guy supports McCain because he is old?
Seriously?
What is this world coming to...
As for looking out for our country - maybe whoever wrote this letter should look for where McCain stands on POW/MIA people.
Google people - it is free.
I say this in all seriousness: McCain has some serious mental issues that need to be addressed. I think he has PTSD and hasn't dealt with it. That or he is just plain psycho.

April 30, 2008 at 6:45 p.m.Laugh all you want. It just makes you look silly. It was Reagan's military that went into Kuwait and cleaned out the Iraqis. And it was Clinton's military that took Afghanistan. Spin all you want--it won't change facts. Bush and Company were asleep at the wheel on 9-11. How can you continue to defend this mommas boy, carpetbagging, yankee, frat rat. He's done.
01/20/09 come-on!
"I believe if you think about it for--oohhh--2 seconds;you will realize it was Clinton's military who took Afghanistan in record time."
ROFLMAO, Clinton dismantled the military and the CIA by 1/3. We didn't have spare parts for many things. Not much spare ammo. Low fuel for many training. We used a lot of Afghanistan rebels with Spec Ops groups to initially take the country and worked with them to run the others out.
It was turned over to the military to do the job. GW didn't check with the PC guide lines before he went in.
WOW, Clinton's military. It was Bush's fault the towers were hit but Clinton gets credit for the military? ROFL. Now that's out there.
April 30, 2008 at 6:31 p.m.Think why think? "I get my news from Newsmax,Townhall"...LOL
April 30, 2008 at 4:59 p.m.They get their military news from the "Commander-in-chief of chaos" Rush Limbaugh. I heard Rush call himself the commander-in-chief today as he was making fun of Bill OReilly's facial expressions expert analyzing tonight's interview with Hillary Clinton.O'Reilly is so excited...LOL
I believe if you think about it for--oohhh--2 seconds;you will realize it was Clinton's military who took Afghanistan in record time. Bush used the very able military he inherited. Just more unfounded silliness. Wayne John, John Wayne or Roy Mark, what ever............Maybe the Navy could have been waiting in the harbor of New York and .............
April 30, 2008 at 4:46 p.m.Wayne John said “Maybe 9/11 would have never happened, if Clinton would have kept up our armed forces." First, you really should read the 9/11 Commission Report and second the terrorist used our own planes. What would the military do? Surround every airport with troops.
April 30, 2008 at 4:39 p.m.You're right about one thing, McCain is old.
Mr. John said Bush2 was called to lead us out of despair (about to choke laughing on that statement). Bush said he was not going to be easy? He did not then, nor does he today have a clue. The most incompetent president in my lifetime.
Mr. John, glad you are a Republican…. you're a credit..LOL
It is the first pro McCain letter, blog, or post I have seen.
I think a majority of that small select 28% reside in Victoria County.
