SAN ANTONIO – Calhoun might want to make the Alamodome its home away from home.

The No. 10 Sandcrabs made their second visit to the Alamo City as successful as their first by running away with a 54-26 season-opening win over Mercedes before an estimated crowd of 15,000 in the final game of Saturday’s Football Classic.

Calhoun scored 76 points in its 2006 bi-district playoff win over Uvalde at the Alamodome and wasted no time getting on the scoreboard against the Tigers. Quarterback James Ezzell ran 48 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage and the teams went on to set a Classic record for combined points scored.

Ezzell, who was named the game’s MVP, also scored on runs of 17 and 6 yards and had 114 of his 133 rushing yards in the first half.

“We’ve worked hard all year long just to come for this moment right here,” Ezzell said. “We were prepared well. Our coaches did great.”

The Sandcrabs scored on six of their first seven possessions and rolled up 208 of their 283 yards in the first half on the ground before finishing with 360 yards rushing and averaging nearly eight yards per carry.

Mercedes made matters worse by fumbling five times in the first half and losing three. The Calhoun defense led by linebacker Jeremy Body made life miserable for quarterback Albert Chavez, tackling him for losses on seven of his first nine carries.

Calhoun running back Sterling Jones added 137 yards on 16 carries and scored on a 74-yard run on the Sandcrabs’ first play from scrimmage in the second half.

Jones’ run came after Mercedes’ Israel Vela returned the second half kickoff for 77 yards and a touchdown. Vela, who had 127 yards on eight carries, also scored on a 54-yard run.

Daylan Bubenik made his first start for Calhoun a successful one by scoring on runs of 12 and 29 yards and throwing a halfback pass for a 35-yard touchdown to Corey McDonnough. Xavier Archangel, who also started in the secondary, scored on an 11-yard run.

The Sandcrabs punted only twice and came within a touchdown of breaking the Classic record for points scored, but Calhoun coach Richard Whitaker went to his bench midway through the fourth quarter.

“My offensive line did their job,” Ezzell said. “They played hard and if it weren’t for them I wouldn’t have been able to do any of this.”

  • kencon,
I ran across and read your blogs a couple of nights ago while looking for writings on the Sandcrabs upcoming game in the Alamodome. First of all, let me be the first to welcome you and your family to our community and our schools. Having been raised in Port Lavaca I graduated from Calhoun High School back in the 1970's as did my children in the 2000's. My folks were employeed by the school district and some of my siblings still are, and my own kids have played for the Crabs, so I have been attending Calhoun Sandcrab football games my entire life. You are correct in your statement that Calhoun didn't have a winning season since 1961 until the 2006 season. What Coach Whitaker and the boys on the teams since have done is nothing short of amazing, especially when you add in extras like setting 3 records in the Alamodome and in both Texas High School Football History and The Toyota Tundra Classic. There is no doubt that the people of Calhoun County are proud of "our" boys, "our" school, and "our" team, but sadly that has not always been the case. During all those years of struggling to win just one game in the season, our boys were not only the laughing stock of surrounding schools but sadly a great deal of this community as well. In truth when I was in school it was so bad that boys who could play football wouldn't because they didn't want to be the butt of the joke. One thing that never faded though was the pride that the students at Calhoun had of our school...that has always been strong. That is why when our team finally broke the long running nightmare of seasons in 2006 the fans, many who themselves are former Calhoun alumni, are and have been a crowd that is nothing less than electric as we have had the extended pleasure of letting out all that long held pride for our Sandcrabs. As for your statements about why we get little accolades from Victoria News services, the answer is simple, we never have. I had the pleasure of dealing with redrage00 back in 2006 over the Crabs...you are correct he hates the Crabs because redrage is a former Victoria Sting and for some reason we were considered their arch rivals. I never could figure that out....especially since playing us was a sure win for them, but while Calhoun did like Stroman, there has never been any love loss between Victoria High and Calhoun. I always felt like it was because there was that air of " Victoria snoody" that set in like fog over the school giving them the impression that they were a bit better than everyone else in South Texas. El Campo is a great team and gets the coverage because the Advocate also owns the Matagorda Advocate in Bay City. Calhoun has taken it's share of whippings from El Campo over the years...but then so has Victoria Stings and the Memorial Vipers. While it is ashame that the Victoria sports news doesn't give us much if any coverage, and even sadder that they can't get facts, stats, and names correct, we're ranked NO.7 and it is Jeremy Boyd, the truth is that Calhoun doesn't want to be considered as part of Victoria in any way, shape, form, or fashion. They take enough liberties with taking good things from our county and tagging them on to making Victoria look better. So I wouldn't worry too much about what the Crabs are or aren't getting in the way of exposure in the Victoria news. We are getting nods, second looks, and allocades from other places in the state that actually matter....like Dave Campbell for one. Don't get me wrong, I have lots of friends in Victoria, and I do shop there from time to time, and I wish the high school kids at Memorial and St. Joseph, as all the children in Victoria the very best in all that they do and great success, but dragging around rivalries from years ago is a waste of time. Thank you for your support of our team and our schools, these kids should be proud and have earned that right. We welcome your children to share in that pride with us, as for the rest...just let it go. GO CRABS!! LOOKING FORWARD TO ANOTHER ELECTRIC SEASON!!

  • Congratulations Calhoun!!! The next game will be at home against Brazosport which is where I played football and where my wife and I graduated from, but our hearts will be totally with the CRABS! I would urge all of you Calhoun Sandcrab fans to read a blog that I posted a couple of weeks ago titled, "What About The Fighting Sandcrabs?". Some guy (RedRage00) with an obvious dislike for Calhoun and people from Port Lavaca continuously made rediculous remarks about Calhoun. I would love for other readers to comment on those remarks. You will have to look under recent blogs and go to page 7 or 8, maybe even 9 by this point. Oh yeah, COME ON VICTORIA ADVOCATE! One of your very own writers wrote a story last week and stated that CALHOUN IS RANKED 6 OR 7 BY VARIOUS 4A POLLS, yet yall have them listed as number 10 now. Until they lose that ranking can't move down, it can only move up. Yall should really give Calhoun more respect than yall do. Do yall not recall a 61 yr slump? I bet yall had plenty to say about Calhoun during those years didn't you? GO CRABS !!!

  • It's great to see the Sandcrabs show what team work can do. But we have to give credit and praise to the Coach...He came to Port Lavaca and took a program that struggled from year to year and turned it around. He gave these kids a taste of victory and they liked it. Now talent that once roamed the halls is now on the field. WAY TO GO COACH...
