PORT LAVACA –The chamber of commerce went without a director for six years.

Lacey Ekberg changed all that.

Beaches, the people and country life brought Ekberg to Port Lavaca. She hopes to continue raising horses with her boyfriend, Jeff.

Ekberg lived in Los Angeles for 16 years, working as a programming executive for Fox Sports before returning to her home state of Idaho. She served with the Yellowstone Chamber of Commerce, then the one in Hells Canyon in Oregon and even moved as far north as Seward, Ala. From 2003 to 2006, she became a troubleshooter for the Department of Commerce in 2008. She moved to Texas in 2006 before serving as the director of the chamber in Atlanta. She missed Texas and came back just a matter of weeks ago, starting with the Port Lavaca chamber on Aug. 15.

Ekberg discusses her plans.

Q: What are your goals?

A: Business retention and enhancement, new events, seminars, training – making the chamber a viable part of the community.

Q: Why be involved in this position?

A: Chambers of commerce to me, they’re kind of the pinnacle of a community, normally. They bring a lot of value to the businesses. It’ll bring the community together with events and convention visitors.

Q: Any specific events in mind?

A: I have pages of suggestions. I know several years ago it was Summer Fest then it changed to Crab Fest. I would like one big annual event to pull outside-of-the-county visitors in here. We are starting a marketing campaign here. We will have smaller events monthly.

Port Lavaca hasn’t been given the opportunity to create that market yet. It’s just unlimited potential here. I think it would be necessary to have some new restaurants and retail.

The housing we desperately need. That’s just no joke. That’s a necessity.

The one thing I’ve seen when I came here, you have the assets to create just a mecca of business here. It just has to be promoted and developed.
