EDNA – The atmosphere at Texana Raceway Park was a little different on Saturday as the American Sprint Car Series prepared to hit the dirt track.

Nothing against the regulars, but the ASCS brought a row of cars not normally witnessed at the Edna track for the Labor Day Weekend of Speed.

“It’s just like bringing NASCAR to town,” said Texana Raceway Park owner Bruce Tesch. “It’s the same thing for these fans who come here on a regular basis. These drivers are here to race and have traveled a long way to get here. They are here to win and that’s exciting for the people who come out.”

The ASCS had originally planned on making it to Edna on July 4th, but had to cancel the event because of rain. On Saturday, rain was feared but never came.

“The racers were here to race for points and get to the top,” Tesch said. “The crowd knows what’s going on and how hard these drivers are trying. It’s just great to see.”

While he wasn’t driving because of mechanical issues with his car, Texana regular Gary Wright wasn’t going to miss an opportunity to see what the ASCS had to offer.

“Seeing the different style of car and the amount of horsepower those cars have is great,” Wright said. “They have a lot to handle. It is real exciting to see them. They run a 30-lap feature and it’s over in three minutes. They were running 13-second laps out there.”

Wright said he went to Corpus Christi on Friday to watch the first day of the ASCS’ Gulf South swing and that he was excited they were able to race on Saturday. Today’s ASCS race in Cleveland had to be cancelled because of weather concerns.

With assistance from mother nature on Saturday, fans were treated to a night of racing well into the night.

“The sprint cars are a joy to watch,” said Victoria’s Mickey Helms who was driving in the Modified races. “Those guys are awesome. It makes it neat that they come from all over.

“The Modifieds are a momentum car. You have to drive them a lot more. You don’t have a lot of horsepower and the suspensions are all the same.”

Along with the local drivers, a full field of drivers from across Texas and border states came into Edna. Greg Coleman was making his fourth run of the season on Saturday and came from Hillister to drive in the sprint car event.

“It’s an enjoyment to come out here and put on a show for the fans,” Coleman said. “It’s something to see for them and it’s great for us as drivers. It’s real exciting.”
