EDNA – The Edna Cowboys scored two touchdowns in the final three minutes of the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough as Hallettsville hung on to take a 40-33 win on Friday.
The Brahmas took a 13-3 lead into halftime after seeing Dante Haynes return a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter and Aaron Alvarez throwing a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Erskine in the second.
Edna scored its first touchdown of the second on its first possession of the third quarter with a 20-yard touchdown connection from Kam Jones to Colten Clay. Jones also finished with 94 yards rushing in the game and found Clay again for a 59-yard touchdown.
Hallettsville finished the third quarter with two touchdowns in the final minute as Ryan Lenzy scored on a 23-yard run and Christian Wood-Dvorak picked off a pass and returned it 31 yards for a touchdown.
Lenzy added his second touchdown of the game early in the fourth with a 77-yard run, while Jeremy Gutierrez scored on a 27-yard fumble recovery.
Rice Cons. 26, Wharton 20, OT
ALTAIR – With a strong defensive performances by both teams, Rice Consolidated won an overtime squeaker against Wharton, beating the Tigers 26-20.
Rice (1-0) led at half 13-7. The Raiders scored on a 27-yard run and a 44-yard pass play. Wharton (0-1) scored on 36-yard pass.
Wharton came back in the second half, scoring on a 77-yard fumble return. The Raiders returned with a 4-yard rushing score before the Tigers tied it up in the fourth with a 78-yard interception return.
Rice won the game in overtime on a 16-yard pass play.
Danbury 21, Louise 8
LOUISE - Scott Zimmerlie threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Danbury Panthers to a 21-8 victory over the Louise Hornets.
Zimmerlie threw for 186 yards and had touchdown tosses of 22 and 35 yardsd.
Louise scored its lone touchdown on a 1-yard run by Kyle Lawson in the second quarter. Lawson finished with 117 yards on 22 carries.
Jourdanton 35, Karnes City 13
KARNES CITY - Michael Paniagua scored on runs of 2 and 9 yards to lead Jourdanton past Karnes City.
Mike McKinney and Jerome Hopkins each scored on 8-yard runs for Karnes City. Lazaro Cardenas kicked the extra point.
