LUBBOCK – Graham Harrell threw for 536 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for another score to lead No. 12 Texas Tech past Eastern Washington 49-24 on Saturday night.
The pass-happy offense of Texas Tech was in midseason form against an overmatched opponent. Harrell was 43-of-58 with an interception.
He connected with eight different receivers but it was a quiet night for Michael Crabtree, the nation’s leading receiver in 2007.
The All-American finished with 73 yards on nine catches, one a 4-yard TD in the first quarter.
TCU 26, New Mexico 3
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Quarterback Andy Dalton ran for two touchdowns as TCU took advantage of New Mexico’s first-half mistakes and went on to a 26-3 win Saturday in the season-opener for both teams.
The Horned Frogs scored on their first three possessions and needed a span of just over four minutes to build a 16-0 lead on the mistake-prone Lobos in the Mountain West Conference game.
Kansas State 45, North Texas 6
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Josh Freeman threw two of his three touchdown passes to Brandon Banks and ran for two more scores, helping Kansas State beat North Texas in another easy home opener for the Wildcats.
Texas State 21, Angelo State 14
SAN MARCOS – Blake Burton scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with 1:48 remaining in the fourth quarterback to cap a comeback win for Texas State over Angelo State.
Houston 55, Southern 3
HOUSTON – Case Keenum threw five touchdown passes to lead Houston to a win over Southern, giving Kevin Sumlin a victory in his first game as the Cougars’ coach.
L.J. Castile and Mark Hafner each caught two touchdowns from Keenum, who was 33-of-43 for 392 yards. The quarterback threw four touchdown passes, a career high, before the end of the first half.
SFA 56, Langston 19
NACOGDOCHES – Jeremy Moses threw for six touchdowns as Stephen F. Austin breezed to a season-opening win over Langston.
Rice 56, SMU 27
HOUSTON – Chase Clement threw for six touchdown passes, leading Rice to a win over SMU on Friday and spoiling the debut of new Mustangs coach June Jones.
Abilene Christian 44, Missouri St. 27
MARYVILLE, Mo. – Abilene Christian running back Bernard Scott ran for 177 yards and two touchdowns and Billy Malone threw four touchdown passes as the eighth-ranked Wildcats knocked off third-ranked Northwest Missouri State fans at Bearcat Stadium.
Northwestern St. 30, Texas A&M Commerce 14
NATCHITOCHES, La. – Josh Daniels and Gary Riggs scored touchdowns off turnovers to lead Northwestern State to a victory over Texas A&M Commerce.
