A radio communications problem interfering with a volunteer fire department’s ability to respond to emergency calls could be fixed.

The Victoria County Commissioners Court agreed Monday to provide $3,319 to the Fordtran Volunteer Fire Department to buy new radio equipment.

Fordtran Fire Chief Larry Green said the problem has resulted in volunteers not getting paged when there are fires or other emergencies. He said the latest case occurred Sunday when only one volunteer got the page about a brush fire.

“Since it was a controlled burn, it wasn’t that big of an issue,” Green said. But he wrote in a letter to the commissioners court that, “Life and property are in danger if we can’t respond because the equipment failed to notify us.”

The new equipment will receive the original page sent out via radio. It will then retransmit the page with a stronger signal.

“It should solve the problem,” Green said. “Hopefully it will hit the dead spots.”
