The Victoria City-County Health Department and its sister organization, the Crossroads Public Health District, inspect places where food is served in Victoria, DeWitt, Jackson and Calhoun counties.

In the inspection reports, each violation in the Food Temperature/Time Requirements category is 5 demerits; in the Personnel/Handling/Source Requirements category, 4 demerits; and in the Facility and Equipment Requirements, 3 demerits. Zero is a perfect score while 100 demerits is the worst possible score.

Each Wednesday, the Advocate publishes inspection results from the previous week. All demerits are reported, but only those in the categories of Food Temperature/Time Requirements and Personnel/Handling/Source Requirements are detailed.

Best Value Inn, 3901 Houston Highway in Victoria. Demerits: 15. Improper cold hold temperature, need to use approved date labeling system. Two facility or equipment violations.

Cafe Spoonz, 6106 N. Navarro St. in Victoria. Demerits: 14. Need to use hand sink for designated use only, need to cover food in cooler. Two facility or equipment violations.

Trinity Shores of Port Lavaca, 201 Trinity Shores St. in Port Lavaca. Demerits: 10. Need to discard dented cans. Two facility or equipment violations.

Whataburger, 8908 N. Navarro St. in Victoria. Demerits: 7. Need to cover food in cooler. One facility or equipment violation.

The Meat Center, 3035 Farm-to-Market Road 822 in Edna. Demerits: 7. Inadequate hot water supply in sink. One facility or equipment violation.

H-E-B Plus, 6106 N. Navarro St. in Victoria. Demerits: 7. Need to discard out-of-date and dented food items. One facility or equipment violation.
