For several months, construction crews have busied themselves clearing land and building walls on North Navarro Street.

And that work will pay off after the dust settles, with three new businesses calling the area in front of Kohl’s and Academy home.

Sonic Drive-In is the first project completed, and opened several weeks ago at 8707 N. Navarro St.

The fast food restaurant relocated from its previous location in front of the Victoria Mall and comes equipped with 22 drive-in stalls, a walk-up ordering spot and drive-through, according to a company news release.

First Victoria National Bank is also staying busy constructing the company’s fourth full-service bank in Victoria at 8811 N. Navarro St.

Tentative plans are to have the 3,500-square-foot bank in operation in September, although the company has no official date set, said Ken Olan, First Victoria’s vice president, chief retail and marketing officer.

It all depends on factors such as weather, Olan said, but the project has remained on track so far.

“If we can surprise them and open in August,” he said, “then that’d be great.”

Walgreens is looking to build its fourth location in the same general area, at 9005 N. Navarro St.

The pharmacy has submitted site plans for an approximately 14,900-square-foot building, said Jared Mayfield, a senior planner with the city planning department.

The company hasn’t applied for a building permit yet, but virtually the only thing in the way of that is a visit from the contractors, said Rick Madrid, building official with the city inspections department.

Walgreens spokeswoman Carol Hively said she did not have record of the company’s prospective Victoria site.
