The Commissioners Court as a Board of Equalization meets next Tuesday, July 7, to fix tax values in Victoria County. Every citizen of this county should be present and present his views on this all-important matter. Many grave contentions are made by citizens on what should be investigated by the Board before such values are fixed. These contentions are: First - That the action of the present assessor in fixing values on lands works a great hardship on our land taxpayers, because lands are valued at 100 percent and upward, while personal property , such as money on hand, promissory notes etc., is either escaping taxation entirely, or is being only partially rendered. Second - That our Constitution requires all taxation to be equal and uniform, which means uniform all over the State. Third - It is contended also that there is on necessity for doubling the tax values on lands in Victoria County.

Area law officers will be trained next week to use the Taser gun, an electronic weapon that has been added to the arsenal of the Victoria Police Department. The Taser, effective to 25 feet, fires two darts attached to wire leads which attach to the persons clothing. The weapon emits a momentary high-voltage low-amperage electric shock which temporarily affects the nervous system. The Victoria Police Department has had the Taser gun for some time, but it has not been put into the field. A police department spokesman said the Taser gun would only be used in certain situations where the subject poses a risk to himself of others. Area law officers will receive orientation and a hands-on demonstration of the Taser in a program scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday at the police firing range at Victoria Regional Airport.
