The city of Seguin made a Victoria Police captain a tentative offer to run its department.

The offer hinges on Capt. Kevin Kelso passing a background check, Seguin City Manager Doug Fasler said.

Earlier this week, Kelso said he was still in the running to become Seguin’s police chief. The possibility was scary and exciting, said Kelso, who’s been with the Victoria Police Department for 21 years, he said.

“This is a wonderful professional opportunity for Capt. Kelso to move on as chief of police,” Victoria Police Chief Bruce Ure said. “He’s been an incredible asset for city of Victoria for many years now.”

It’s a compliment to a police department when one of its officers is hired to lead another organization, Ure said.

Fasler expected to get the results of Kelso’s background check this week, but said it might take longer because of the holiday weekend.

If Kelso leaves Victoria, Ure already has a plan to replace him. Earlier this year, the department assessed officers for promotion. The top-ranked officer at each level will get a promotion, Ure said.

Lt. Kevin Sanderson would become a captain, Sgt. Jason Cross would become a lieutenant and officer Jason Mikeska would become a sergeant.

“We have no reason to go outside to look for these positions because the organization possess qualified and capable personnel,” Ure said.
