Bay City’s Zach Benson pitched and played the infield this season and has been honored at both positions by the Texas Sports Writers Association.
Benson, a senior, was a third-team selection at shortstop and received honorable mention at pitcher, on the TSWA’s Class 4A all-state squad.
Benson hit .495 with two home runs, four triples, 10 doubles and 26 RBI. He had an on-base percentage of .556 and scored 46 runs for the Blackcats, who advanced to the regional quarterfinals.
Benson will play baseball at San Jacinto College North next season.
Logan Verrett of state champion Calallen was the player of the year and Calallen’s Steve Chapman was the coach of the year.
