PORT LAVACA – The rain soaked the American flags dotting the sidewalks and storefronts Friday morning.
J.C. Melcher Jr. watched the rain pour down on Main Street in Port Lavaca from the safety of his hardware store.
The rain would have stopped the Children’s Freedom Parade, but low participation forced event coordinator Jean Wehmeyer to cancel it anyway. She vows the decorated bike and wagon parade will go on next Fourth of July.
Today, residents should see similar weather with a 60 percent chance of rain and highs in the upper 80s, Larry Maifeld, hydrometeorological technician with the National Weather Service in Corpus Christi said.
The next several days show chances of rain as a tropical wave hovers along the coast right now, he said. But the rain will be spotty with some places getting a couple inches and others getting just a drop.
The farmers should be happy, he added.
“Happy Birthday, America,” Maifeld said.
